Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release

Catcher Matt McBride hit two home runs for the third time this season, but the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (34-28) fell to the Salt Lake Bees (33-32), 8-6, in the first game of their four-game homestand at Security Service Field.

McBride's first blast was a two-run shot that brought home Corey Dickerson in the first inning. The Sky Sox' two run lead was short lived, however as the Bees quickly tied it up in the second inning when former Sky Sox infielder Tommy Field was hit by a pitch and was then plated on a Trent Oeltjen homer. After the dinger, Michael Solbach, who made the spot start in place of Chris Volstad, got three straight outs to end the top of the second.

The back-and-forth affair continued in the bottom of the second when the Sky Sox retook the lead on a Hernan Iribarren RBI triple off of Barry Enright. The three-bagger was the team's 42nd triple of the season which is the highest total in professional baseball.

The scoring continued in the third when Salt Lake opened up a 5-3 advantage. Solbach gave up a leadoff single to Andrew Romine, but then retired the next two batters. After striking out Efren Navarro for the second out of the inning, the right-hander was replaced by Brett Jacobson. Jacobson walked the first batter he faced, Kole Calhoun, and then gave up a three-run shot to Tommy Field to give the Bees the two-run lead.

After a scoreless fourth and fifth innings the Bees expanded on their lead in the top of the sixth inning on a RBI single by Luis Jimenez. Colorado Springs began to cut into the lead in the bottom of the inning when Ryan Wheeler clubbed his fourth homer of the season, a solo shot.

In the bottom of the seventh inning reliever Dane De La Rosa (W, 1-0) issued two straight walks to Iribarren and Dickerson. The runners advanced on a Charlie Culberson sacrifice bunt and then Iribarren scored on a Charlie Blackmon single to tie up the game at six all. Dickerson attempted to reach third base on the hit, but was thrown out by Field.

Salt Lake broke the tie an inning later when Trent Oletjen doubled and then scored on a double by Matt Long. Colorado Springs looked to even the game up at seven in the bottom of the eighth when Mitch Stetter loaded the bases on two walks and a single, but Dickerson grounded into a force out to end the inning.

The Bees added one more run in the ninth when Calhoun tripled home Jimenez to make the final score 8-6.

Tomorrow, Colorado Springs will look to even the series when lefty Drew Pomeranz (7-1, 4.50) takes the hill against former Sky Sox righty Billy Buckner (5-2, 4.68).
