Adirondack Phantoms News Release

GLENS FALLS, NY - Jon Matsumoto and Ben Holmstrom both scored goals for the Adirondack Phantoms, but Jerome Samson had a hat trick and one assist to lead the Albany River Rats to a 6-2 win Wednesday night at the Glens Falls Civic Center.

In an up tempo first period the Albany leading scorer Jerome Samson continued to be a menace to the Phantoms. Samson, who had twelve points (4 goals, 8 assists) in the first nine games of the season series with Adirondack, scored twice in the opening period with his first coming at 1:59 on a slap shot from the right point that may have taken a slight deflection before eluding goaltender Jeremy Duchesne. It was 2-0 River Rats just after a media timeout when Stefan Chaput cleanly won an offensive zone face off and Samson quickly blasted in a shot from the top of the left circle at 14:27.

Albany made it 3-0 at 5:06 of the second period when Steven Goertzen started a two-on-one rush and made a nice pass over the Chris Terry, who then roofed the puck at the far post. 1:41 later it was 4-0 River Rats as Oscar Osala finished off another odd-man rush by poking home a rebound at 6:47. Late in the period Adirondack leading scorer Jon Matsumoto brought the home crowd to its feet with a stunning unassisted shorthanded goal to get the Phantoms on the scoreboard. He created the turnover, raced away from the defenders and beat goalie Mike Morrison with a smooth backhand-to-forehand move with 9.2 seconds remaining in the period.

But Samson made sure that Adirondack did not build any momentum from Matsumoto's goal by taking a pass from Goertzen on another rush and beating Duchesne to the blocker side at 8:06 of the third period. Rookie Ben Holmstrom cashed in with his second goal in his fifth pro game at 13:25, assisted by Andreas Nodl and Jonathon Kalinski, who used the fore-check to cause a turnover and set up Holmstrom at the back side of the net. The Phantoms out-shot the River Rats 17-7 in the third period, but could never get closer than three goals. Albany rookie Zac Dalpe capped off the scoring on yet another transition play three-on-two, taking a centering pass and beating Duchesne for his first career professional goal and point at 14:16.

Mike Morrison finished the game with 30 saves on 32 shots to record the victory, helping Albany snap a three-game losing streak and improve to 39-27-3-5 on the season. Jeremy Duchense made 25 saves on 31 shots and took the loss as Adirondack fell to 31-35-3-3. The Phantoms out-shot the River Rats 32-31 and went 0-for-4 on the power play; Albany was also 0-for-4 with the man-advantage.

The Phantoms will hit the road at they battle the Hartford Wolf Pack on Friday, March 26th at 7:00 pm at XL Center in Connecticut. Adirondack's next home game comes on Friday, April 2nd as they host the Syracuse Crunch for a 7:30 pm puck drop at the Glens Falls Civic Center.
