Albany Devils News Release

ALBANY, NY -- Joe Whitney's third period goal gave life to the Albany Devils, but at that point it was too little, too late. The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins skated away from Times Union Center Friday with a 5-1 victory for their sixth win in the last eight games. They improved to 11-7-1-0, while the Devils moved to 7-5-1-3.

"We knew before the game, we knew all week of practice, that they were a tight checking group," said captain Rod Pelley. "They don't give up much. It's going to be a battle, every time we've played these guys in the past it's been a battle. When it comes down to it, they were stronger on their sticks, they got guys in on draws, won 50/50 pucks and did the little things to win a hockey game and we didn't."

Whitney scored at 6:59 of the third period on a give-and-go play with Reece Scarlett. The goal was his fifth of the season and second in the last two games.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton built their advantage thanks to multi-point efforts from Josh Archibald (1g-1a), Jayson Megna (1g-1a), Scott Wilson (1g-1a), Bobby Farnham (2a) and Andrew Ebbett (2a).

Penguins netminder Jeff Zatkoff, who was one save away from his second consecutive shutout, made 14 saves for his fifth win.

For Albany, Keith Kinkaid made his first start since Nov. 2 and made seven stops in 22:36 of action. Wedgwood provided some relief and had 11 saves in 37:24.

"The compete level wasn't good enough for the first 40 minutes," Pelley said. "We basically have to take a lashing to get going in the third period. As a group, collectively, each guy needs to be better including myself and that's really the bottom line."

Dominik Uher and Wilson opened the scoring with goals just 18 seconds apart. The first tally, which was reviewed, came at 3:05 and the second followed at 3:23.

In the second, Archibald found the back of the net 55 seconds into the period and Dumoulin made the score 4-0 at 2:36.

Megna capped Wilkes-Barre/Scranton's scoring at 2:58 of the third frame.

"You're not always going to win on that Friday, but you are certainly not going to want to have what we have here," Kowalsky responded when asked about the beginning of a three-in-three weekend. "But that's life we have to move on, there's not a lot of changes we can make so we have to go back with the same line-up and expect these guys to respond. We have to respond as a group. And I would say individuals but every guy on that ice has more in them and has to have more in them tomorrow."

Game Notes

Rod Pelley played in his 300th career AHL game ... Mark Fraser (three) and Paul Thompson (two) both served their first games of their suspensions ... Whitney registered his 68th career goal and his 161st career point.
