Portland Pirates News Release
Norfolk, Va.- The Portland Pirates (9-9-0-0) were victorious Friday night as they won the third game of a four game road trip on the against the Norfolk Admirals Friday. Mike McKenna proved to be a powerhouse defending the goal with 36 saves on the night and making some crucial power play saves.
The Pirates struck first as Jordan Martinook netted his third goal of the season at 12:49 in the first period. Brendan Shinnimin and Justin Hodgman were both on the assist. The only penalty of the period came at 19:53 when Norfolk's Dave Steckel was called for interference.
The Pirates began the second period on a power play hoping to nix their 42-0 recent power play record. They failed to convert but soon got another chance when Norfolk's Alex Krushelnyski was called for goaltender interference at 2:55. Mike McKenna seemed to be shaken up but brushed it off and continued to make some spectacular saves during the remainder of the period. Evan Oberg scored the Pirates' second goal of the night--his third goal for the Pirates-at 6:24 in the second period. Phil Lane and Francis Wathier assisted on the goal.
The Admirals continued to weather the storm against the Pirates and scored their only goal at 19:29 in the second period. The goal was scored by Chris Wagner, assisted by Marc Cantin and Kevin Gagne.
During the third period there were penalties given to Portland's Ryan Shinnimin and Norfolk's John Kurtz for unsportsmanlike conduct at 12:30. Soon after, Norfalk got a power play with a hooking call on Portland's Brendan Shinnimin at 15:18 followed by a penalty on the Pirates' Andrew Campbell at 16:50 for tripping.
The Pirates were down 5-3 for 28 seconds as the Admirals continued to put pressure on the net. Mike Mckenna stood tall and blocked all the power play shots on goal. The Admirals outshot the Pirates 38-21 but Portland came out on top thanks to McKenna's strong defense.
The Pirates will play the Norfolk Admirals once again tomorrow night in the second game of the two game series. They return home to the Cross Insurance Arena on Wednesday, November 26 with a 7 p.m. game against the Worcester Sharks. They also will play Black Friday, November 28 against the Providence Bruins at 7 p.m. Tickets for that game are buy-one-get-one-half-off if you call 207-PIRATES and mention Black Friday.
