Alaska Aces News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Scott Burt and Vladimir Novak scored 36 seconds apart in the first period and Jean-Philippe Lamoureux stopped 28 shots as Alaska took the opener of a three-game series with Ontario by a score of 3-1 in front of 3,470 Wednesday at Sullivan Arena.
The Aces (25-14-3 overall) have won four straight at home, are unbeaten in their last six games (5-0-1), and have gone 7-1-1 over their previous nine outings. Alaska also ended the Reign's five-game unbeaten string and has beaten its California rival in three of four match-ups this season. The series continues Friday and Saturday at 7:15 p.m.
The Aces out-shot the visitors 14-7 in the first period and took a 2-0 lead on the strength of their third line. Scott Burt poked a loose puck sitting on the goal line behind Ontario starter Kellen Briggs at 6:52, his third goal in as many games and eighth of the year. 36 seconds later, Novak came over the blue line on a rush and whipped a wrist shot past the glove of Briggs.
The score remained 2-0 until five minutes into the third period, when Colin Hemingway scored a power play goal at 5:20, his second goal in 16 games and only Alaska's second in its last 32 attempts with the man advantage. Three minutes later, Jon Rheault broke up Lamoureux's bid for a league-leading fifth shutout, cutting the gap to 3-1, but the starting goaltender for the National Conference in last week's ECHL All-Star Game held sway for the rest of the period to collect his league-leading 20th victory.
The Aces out-shot the Reign 33-29 and, in four games against Ontario, have gone 7-for-19 on the power play while killing 17 of 18 chances against. This weekend's games will be broadcast live on KFQD AM 750, with the Peanut Farm Pre-Game Show getting underway 15 minutes prior to the opening face-off.
