Alaska Aces News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Four days after going coast-to-coast to win a game at Stockton in overtime, Joe Talbot had a goal, an assist, and the game-winner in the shootout as the Alaska Aces clipped the Thunder 4-3 before 4,218 Wednesday at Sullivan Arena.
Stockton and Alaska had split a pair of 3-2 games at Stockton Arena over the weekend, and will face one another again Friday and Saturday in Anchorage. The Aces took their first lead in regulation in four games against the Thunder when visiting goalie Cam Ellsworth misplayed a puck in front of his own net, leading to a tap-in off the backhand side for Ryan MacMurchy, who had been loaned to Alaska by its AHL affiliate in Peoria for this week's series. That miscue, coming at 6:41 of the first period, was off-set eight minutes later on the first of two Stockton power play goals of the night, Tim O'Connell's ninth, that tied the game 1-1 after the opening 20 minutes.
Talbot gave the Aces a 2-1 lead off the rush with 5:40 left in the second period, scoring in his third straight contest and for the ninth time in 14 games this season. Alaska saw its one-goal margin turn into a one-goal deficit within 11 seconds to start the third period, as Mike Lalonde scored on the power play and Steve Slonina followed off the rush in the frame's first minute. Kimbi Daniels scored on a rebound at 4:42 of the final period to deadlock the game 3-3, and when Tim Sestito hit the post against Aces goalie Derek Gustafson on a penalty shot with 2:06 remaining, the teams headed into overtime, and then a shootout. Julian Talbot and Lalonde scored in the third round, setting the stage for Joe Talbot (five years older than Julian) to beat Ellsworth with a wrist shot in the fifth and deciding round.
Gustafson finished with a season-high 39 saves, plus four out of five stops in the shootout, to improve his personal record to 12-1-1 over his last 14 starts. The Aces, now 10-1-1 in their last 12 home games and 26-11-2 overall, best in the ECHL, practice tomorrow in Sullivan Arena before resuming their series with the Thunder (19-9-8) Friday and Saturday at 7:15 p.m. Tickets are now available by calling 258-ACES or at www.alaskaaces.com.
