Akron slips past Trenton 3-1

(Trenton, NJ)- Akron scored the two go-ahead runs in the ninth inning to nudge past Trenton 3-1 on Saturday night from Waterfront Park. Akron took its second straight over the Thunder and evened the five-game series at 2-2.

With the game tied at 1-1 in the ninth inning, Akron Designated hitter Ryan Goleski reached on a double off of Thunder reliever Oneli Perez (1-2). After an intentional walk to Left fielder Nathan Panther, Second baseman Brandon Pinckney produced a two-run double to give Akron a 3-1 lead. Trenton (72-47) went down 1-2-3 in the ninth inning. Akron reliever Chuck Lofgren (2-5) recorded the final four outs of the game for the win. Trenton took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning on a throwing error by Akron starting pitcher Scott Lewis. Lewis fielded a sacrifice bunt from Shortstop Ramiro Pena and made an errant throw down the first base line allowing Second baseman Reegie Corona to score the game's first run. Akron tied the game at 1-1 in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Third baseman Wes Hodges.

Akron Starting pitcher Scott Lewis tossed 7 2/3 innings and only gave up four hits and one run for a no-decision. He struck out five and did not walk a batter in his longest start of the season. Trenton Starting pitcher Eric Hacker tossed six innings and allowed four hits and one earned run. He struck out seven and walked one. Perez surrendered four hits and two earned runs in three innings to take the loss. Trenton had the go-ahead runner at third base with one out in the seventh inning, and runners at first and second base with two outs in the eighth inning, but failed to score both times. Center fielder Austin Jackson had two of Trenton's four hits, including a double.

Trenton and Akron will play the rubber game of the five-game series on Sunday afternoon. Game time is set for 1:05 p.m. RHP Steven White (0-1, 6.00) will start for Trenton against Akron RHP Frank Hermann (9-5, 4.46).
