Eight is Enough...The Aeros snapped Trenton's eight-game winning streak Saturday with a 3-1 win before the series finale was rained out Sunday afternoon. Akron got a strong start from RHP Kevin Dixon Saturday night as the native of Burnsville, MN, settled in after a shaky first inning and earned his first victory at the Double-A level. Celebrating his six-month wedding anniversary with wife Katie in the stands, Dixon allowed four of the first five batters he faced to reach base to open the game but limited the damage to just a single run while leaving the bases loaded. Akron then took the lead for good with two runs in the bottom of the third, highlighted by a steal of home by SS Brandon Chaves on a double-steal. It was the first successful steal of home for the Aeros since Jason Cooper pulled it off June 5th, 2005 against Bowie.
Closing Time...Akron closer Randy Newsom converted his ninth save in as many chances Saturday against Trenton. Earlier this season, Newsom became the Aeros all-time saves leader. He has 27 career saves with the Aeros, and passed Mike Soper (24 saves) on the all-time list Wednesday against Altoona. On Saturday, Newsom walked two Thunder hitters in the ninth, but escaped the inning to pick up the save in a 3-1 win. Newsom has been untouchable since his first appearance of the season on April 6th at Harrisburg when Newsom allowed two earned runs and walked two, but protected a ninth inning, four-run Akron lead to give the Aeros a 13-11 win. Since that game, Newsom has not allowed an earned run in 14 appearances, and has allowed just eight hits, one run, six walks, while striking out nine in 13.2 innings pitched. Newsom has not blown a save opportunity since July 25th, 2007, when he allowed a game-tying run at Harrisburg. His offense backed him up in the top of the 10th in that game, though, providing the winning run, and earning Newsom the victory. His last loss came July 20th, 2007, against Reading at Canal Park.
Getting Defensive...With Saturday's errorless game, the Aeros have gone five consecutive games without a defensive miscue. Akron's last error came on May 5th when RF Stephen Head booted a single against Altoona in the eighth inning. Akron is seventh in the Eastern League with a .973 fielding percentage and 36 errors in 35 games this season. The Aeros have turned 32 double plays on the year. Behind the plate, Armando Camacaro has caught six of 11 runners (55%) trying to steal this season in 96.2 innings as the backstop.
On the Road Again...Akron hits the road this week, with three games at Altoona and three at Reading. The Aeros were swept on their last road trip in three games at Bowie, and their last road win came in a 2-0 decision at Altoona on April 23rd.
