For the fifth year in a row, the AHL's regular season begins in Wilkes-Barre, this time with the first-ever meeting between the Penguins and the Manitoba Moose (7:05 ET, 6:05 CT)... The 2004-05 Penguins boast one of the top goaltending tandems in the AHL in fan favorite Andy Chiodo and 2003 first-overall draft pick Marc-Andre Fleury... Rookie defenseman Ryan Whitney, picked fifth overall in 2002, made his pro debut during the Calder Cup 2004 Playoffs and tallied 10 points in 20 postseason contests for Wilkes-Barre... The Penguins are returning 16 players from their 2004 Eastern Conference championship squad, including leading scorer and 2004 AHL All-Rookie forward Michel Ouellet... After missing the postseason in 2004, Manitoba added Jeff Heerema, Lee Goren and Josh Green up front, former Calder Cup champions Joe DiPenta and Johnathan Aitken on defense and Calder Cup 2004 MVP Wade Flaherty in net, where he'll share time with Alex Auld... Jason King had 23 points in 29 games for the Moose last season, and was the NHL's Rookie of the Month for Vancouver last November... Manitoba begins the season playing nine of its first 11 games on the road.
The Coyotes era begins in Utah tonight (7:35 MT, 9:35 ET) as Cincinnati visits The "E" Center... Phoenix's affiliation with the Grizzlies brings some outstanding young talent to West Valley City, including former first-round draft picks Keith Ballard, Jakub Koreis and Fredrik Sjostrom and 2004 AHL All-Star goaltender David LeNeveu... Utah's rookie head coach is Pat Conacher, a veteran of 521 NHL and 459 AHL games in his playing career... The Mighty Ducks are looking to build on their first-ever playoff series last spring, when they upset defending Calder Cup champion Houston in a West Division qualifying series... Forwards Stanislav Chistov, Alexei Smirnov and Joffrey Lupul were all first-round draft picks by Anaheim... Ilya Bryzgalov tended goal for Russia at last month's World Cup of Hockey... Chris Kunitz, also an AHL All-Star in 2004, led the Ducks with 19 goals in 59 games last season... Utah outscored Cincinnati, 14-5, in four meetings on home ice in 2003-04.

STANDINGS CHANGES:
With the introduction of the shootout in 2004-05, the AHL's standings will be in a W-L-OTL-SOL format. Teams receive two points for a win (in regulation, overtime or shootout) and one point for an overtime loss or shootout loss. In the 2004 preseason, 12 of 48 games were tied after regulation; five were decided in overtime, while seven required a shootout.
