LOOKING AHEAD:
For the fourth year in a row, the AHL's regular season begins in Wilkes-Barre, this time with the Penguins hosting East Division rival Norfolk tonight (7:05 ET)... The Admirals, coming off their second straight division crown, set sail with a young crew that includes seven rookies on their 22-man opening night roster, including Anton Babchuk, a first-round pick in the 2002 NHL draft, and Matt Ellison, the Canadian Major Junior Rookie of the Year last season... Craig Anderson, whose 1.94 GAA last year was the fourth-lowest in AHL history, is back between the pipes for Norfolk... The Penguins return a solid core of prospects, including Kris Beech, Shane Endicott, Michal Sivek, Colby Armstrong and 2003 AHL All-Stars Ross Lupaschuk and Tomas Surovy. New faces in Wilkes-Barre include defenseman Drew Fata (brother of two-time AHL All-Star and current Pittsburgh Penguin Rico Fata) and veteran goaltender Martin Brochu, a former AHL MVP and Calder Cup champion.
Tonight's game is expected to be the 101st consecutive regular-season sellout at the Wachovia Arena at Casey Plaza, extending the Penguins' own AHL record... It also marks the AHL return of Wilkes-Barre head coach Michel Therrien, former bench boss of the Montreal Canadiens. In the AHL, Therrien led Fredericton to the conference finals in 1999 and won a division title with Quebec in 2000.
