Arkansas Aeros News Release
PINE BLUFF, Ark. - The inaugural season for Arkansas' two newest members of the American Basketball Association kicked off Tuesday night when the Aeros downed the RiverCatz 153-134 at the Pine Bluff Convention Center.
The contest provided coaches Bob Hoffman of the Aeros and Ed Corporal of the RiverCatz their only preseason look at their teams heading into the regular season. Without another exhibition contest on the schedule, Tuesday night's tilt was it until the teams open their regular season next week.
The Aeros' Curtis Haywood nearly missed a triple-double, leading all scorers with 33 points while pulling down 16 rebounds and dishing out 9 assists. The former Oklahoma City University standout was one of five Aeros in double figures as Daryn Selvy added 29 points to go with 9 rebounds and Jarred Merrill netted 25 more points to go with 16 boards.
Former NBA standout Todd Day had 20 points in 22 minutes of play for the Aeros.
John Grice led the RiverCatz with 29 points and 12 rebounds on the night. He was joined in double figures by four other RiverCatz, including recently signed Kareem Reid who had 21 points, 7 rebounds and a game-high 12 assists.
The Aeros open their regular season at home Nov. 2 when they take on Monterrey Veneno at 7:05 p.m. at the All-Star Sports Arena in Springdale. The RiverCatz host the Monterrey team at the same time the following night at the Pine Bluff Convention Center to kick off their 2006-07 campaign.
NOTES: A boxscore was distributed Wednesday on this game. Also, Friday's Aeros preseason game with the Dallas Diesel has been cancelled.
Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
