Wildcats salute US Marines at exhibition game

October 26, 2006 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
San Diego Wildcats News Release

San Diego, CA. The ABA San Diego Wildcats met the US Marines of Camp Pendleton, CA in an exhibition game. The Wildcats won 133-86. However, as important as the game was, Wildcats coach Ray Johnson called for a timeout just before the game ended and had the PA announcer ask everyone to stand and salute with applause the efforts not only of all of the Marines that played in the game, but also all of the men and women of all armed forces for the efforts and sacrifices day in and day out that they and their families endure to allow all of us to be free. The 500 people in attendance responded enthusiastically - and the Wildcats players stood and went over to the Marine Corps team and thanked each and every player for the role they play in making this the greatest country in the world.

The game was a good game. Celebrity player, Cookie "Chainsaw" Randolph from the Morning Show Dave, Shelley and Chainsaw at KGB 101.5FM played and actually scored eight points. "He rebounded, had a steal and was really a plus to have him out there with us," said Tim Ovie, GM of the Wildcats. "I had mixed feelings about celebrity players but if they all play as well as Chainsaw, it will be great." The Wildcats had 5 players in double figures led by Cardell Butler's 39 and Phil Givins 18.
