Chesapeake Baysox News Release

BOWIE, MD - The Akron Aeros burst out of the gate with a five-run first inning and withstood a late rally by the Baysox to hold on for a 7-5 win before 6,307 at Prince George's Stadium on Saturday.

Richard Stahl had a shaky start to his Baysox debut, allowing four hits and two walks in the opening frame. All told, nine Aeros came to the plate in the first to give Akron a 5-0 lead.

Stahl, who was promoted from Class A Frederick before the game, settled down after the first, giving up just one more run on five hits in the following four innings.

Mike Huggins got two runs back for the Baysox in the second, when he followed Cory Keylor's double with a home run to left that cut Akron's lead to 5-2. The blast was Huggins' first of the season.

Akron increased its advantage to 6-2 in the fifth when Stahl (0-1) surrendered an RBI single to Pat Osborn. The Aeros' third baseman finished 3-for-4 on the night and drove in three runs.

The Baysox added an unearned run in the seventh, when Aeros shortstop Ivan Ochoa booted a grounder by Huggins that allowed Jeff Inglin to score.

Ryan Keefer gave up a run in the top of the ninth to make it 7-3, but the Baysox battled back in their final at-bats. Inglin and Keylor drew walks off Todd Pennington to start the bottom of the ninth, but two quick outs brought Brandon Fahey to the plate as Bowie's last hope. Down to his last strike, Fahey pulled a pitch into right for a two-run double that brought the tying run to the plate.

Aeros manager Torey Lovullo called Chris Cooper in from the bullpen to face Peter Bergeron, and Cooper quelled the rally by striking Bergeron out to end the game.
