Connecticut Defenders News Release
(Norwich, Conn.) -- The Norwich Navigators battled back from two deficits and three ties, as third baseman Julio Cordido ripped a two-out, two-run single in the 8th inning to give Norwich a 6-4 victory over the Portland Sea Dogs at Dodd Stadium tonight.
The Navigators trailed 1-0 and 3-1, and took a 4-3 lead only to see an error allow the tying run to score, but Norwich refused to give in. After scoring two runs in the 6th to tie the game at three, the Navs went ahead in the 7th on a single by Cordido, a sacrifice, a groundout to the right side and a wild pitch. But the Gators gave the lead right back in the top of the 8th when reliever Erick Threets walked Hanley Ramirez leading off the inning. Ramirez moved to second on a passed ball and scored on an error by first baseman Tyler Von Schell. But Norwich fought back in the bottom of the inning. Von Schell singled and was sacrificed to second. A.J. LaBarbera was intentionally walked and Trey Lunsford grounded out to the pitcher, moving the runners to 2nd and 3rd. Cordido then grounded a single to left just under the glove of Portland third baseman Raul Nieves, scoring both runners and providing the winning margin in the game.
Norwich starter Chris Begg was effective once again, going seven strong innings and allowing just six hits and three earned runs. Begg has now allowed three earned runs or less in all of his ten starts this year and he has gone at least six innings in seven straight starts. Threets (1-1) picked up the win for Norwich and Portland reliever Phil Devey (0-5) took the loss. Alfredo Simon, clearly taking a liking to his new role as closer, pitched a perfect 9th inning for his fourth save in as many chances.
Dan Ortmeier had another good game, going two-for-four with his seventh home run of the season, a line drive shot to right-center. Tyler Von Schell stole his third base in as many games after have four career steal in 4+ years of professional baseball. The Navigators will be basck in action for a doubleheader with Portland starting tomorrow afternoon. Righty James Garcia is scheduled to start in Game 1 for Norwich and he will be opposed by Portland lefty Jon Lester. Righty Anthony Pannone is scheduled to get his first start of the year for the Navigators in Game 2, and he will be opposed by Portland's David Pahucki. First pitch of Game 1 is at 2:05 pm. Game 2 will start approximately 20 minutes after the conclusion of Game 1.
