Fisher Cats take two in New Britain
May 28, 2005 - Eastern League (EL1)
New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
(New Britain)- Left fielder Justin Singleton scored from third base on a wild pitch in the top of the seventh inning as the New Hampshire Fisher Cats edged the New Britain Rock Cats in a 3-2 win Saturday night. New Hampshire also won the completion of Friday night's suspended game, 6-3, to move into sole possession of first place in the Eastern League's Northern Division.
In the seventh, which was the final inning of the nightcap because the teams had to complete the suspended game first, Singleton doubled to right center off New Britain starter and loser Matt Yeatman (1-3). He went to third on right fielder Ron Acuna's sacrifice hit. New Britain intentionally walked third baseman Rob Cosby, but the fourth ball was thrown over the head of catcher Gabby Torres, allowing Singleton to score the winning run.
New Hampshire first baseman Kevin Barker had given the Fisher Cats a 1-0 lead in the first with a solo homer, his sixth of the year. New Britain tied the game on an RBI single by Doug Deeds in the fourth off Fisher Cat starter Ryan Houston. Houston did not figure in the decision, but did a solid job in his first start of the year. He allowed two hits and one run in five innings.
The Fisher Cats (27-20) went ahead 2-1 on back-to-back fifth inning doubles by Cosby and catcher Jose Umbria.
New Britain (18-28) tied the game back up at 2-2 in the last of the sixth against Fisher Cat reliever Steve Andrade (1-2). Shortstop Tommy Watkins (2-for-3) scored from second on an infield single by Deeds (2-for-3). Andrade earned the win when the Fisher Cats broke the tie.
In the suspended game, third baseman Rob Cosby homered and Ryan Roberts, Maikel Jova and Justin Singleton each had two hits.
Cam Reimers (5-3), who took the mound when the game resumed in the third inning, allowed two earned runs over 6 innings to pick up his fourth straight win. Lee Gronkiewicz pitched a perfect ninth inning for his 14th save.
New Hampshire has won 7 of 8 games to move into first place. The series continues in New Britain Sunday afternoon at 1:35pm with right hander Jamie Vermilyea (1-1, 1.65) making his first start of the season against New Britain right hander Daylan Childress (0-0, 0.00). The series concludes Monday afternoon at 1:35pm.
The Fisher Cats will return home to open a six-game homestand Tuesday night against the Portland Sea Dogs (Boston AA). That game will feature the first fireworks show in team history. Tickets are available by visiting www.nhfishercats.com or by calling 603-641-2005.
