Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release

Welcome Back! Mike Jacobs ended last night's game with a two-run homer to dead center in the bottom of the ninth, giving the Binghamton Mets an 8-6 victory over the Trenton Thunder in their series opener last night at NYSEG Stadium. Binghamton came back from a 6-0 deficit by scoring eight times in their last three innings, with Jeff Duncan's three-run triple tying the score in the eighth. After having their four-game series at Portland rained out, it was Binghamton's first game in five days. The B-Mets have won four of their last five.

Walking Off Winners Jacobs' blast last night gave the B-Mets their first bottom-of-the-ninth victory this year. Overall, it was the fourth game Binghamton's won in walk-off fashion, the second on a home run. David Bacani's 13th-inning homer on April 26th gave the B-Mets a 13-10 victory over Portland.

‘Pen Getting It Done Last night, reliever Rafael Lopez was charged with two earned runs, ending a run of 13 consecutive scoreless innings by the B-Mets' bullpen. B-Mets relievers have been charged with just five earned runs over their last 10 games, posting a 1.02 ERA during that stretch. The B-Mets' bullpen hasn't been charged with earned runs in seven of those 10 games.

On The Mound Ken Chenard, RHP (3-4, 4.01) Last Time Out: Sun. vs. ALT (L): 5 IP, 6 R, 10 H, 3 BB, 8 K (L 6-2)...The righthander gave up all six of his runs in the first three innings, the big blows being a three-run triple by Rich Thompson in the second and a Carlos Maldonado two-run homer in the third. Ken allowed at least two hits in every inning, as the 10 hits he gave up are a B-Mets season high. However, Ken managed to go at least five innings for the fourth consecutive start and for the sixth time in his last seven outings.

This Season: Ken has given up three runs or fewer in eight of his nine starts this year, but he hasn't picked up a win in his last four starts. Ken's struggled at NYSEG Stadium going 0-3 with a 7.24 ERA in three starts, compared to 3-1, 2.48 marks in six road outings. Hitters leading off an inning are 14 for 40 (.350) against Ken with three home runs. The righthander's given up seven homers on the year, third-most in the EL.

Against Trenton: Ken faced the Thunder four times last season, starting twice. Trenton roughed him up in a start on August 29th at Waterfront Park, with Ken giving up six runs in 2 1/3 innings in a 6-3 Trenton win, as Ken got hung with the loss. Ken's other start against Trenton came in the second game of a doubleheader on August 6th at NYSEG Stadium. In that outing, he threw six shutout innings, striking out seven, for the 1-0 win. 2004 vs. Trenton: 1-1, 9.64, 14 IP, 19 H, 9 BB, 14 K.

Background: The Victorville, CA native is in his seventh pro season, all of them spent in the Mets organization, after being selected by New York in the 46th round of the 1998 draft out of Fullerton (CA) Junior College. Last season, he tied for the B-Mets team lead in wins, going 9-6 with a 4.45 ERA in 27 games, 17 of them starts.

Homer Happy Trenton scored five of its six runs via the longball last night, thanks to three home runs, the most B-Mets pitchers have given up in one game. Binghamton also yielded three homers – all solo shots – in a 3-2, 15-inning loss May 17th at Reading. It's just the fifth multi-homer game against Binghamton. Only four teams have given up fewer home runs than the 31 yielded by B-Mets hurlers.
