Reading, PA -Julio Rodriguez held the Aeros hitless into the sixth inning, and finished with seven strong innings Sunday, leading the Reading Phillies to a 4-2 victory over Akron at First Energy Stadium.
Rodriguez, a 21-year-old Double-A rookie, breezed through the first five innings as the Phillies built a 4-0 lead. He did not yield a run or hit until the sixth inning. Rodriguez (4-1) fanned a season-high 10 batters and worked around four walks.
Reading (38-28) scored an unearned run against Akron starter Steven Wright in the first inning, taking advantage of a wild pitch, a fielding error and a walk to set up a sacrifice fly by catcher Sebastian Valle. In the fourth, the R-Phils tacked on three more, again helped along by a dropped third strike and a passed ball. Wright yielded back-to-back RBI singles to Miguel Abreu and D'Arby Myers in the inning, as the Phillies took a 4-0 lead.
The Aeros (42-24) got on the board in the sixth when Rodriguez walked Roberto perez and delivered two wild pitches to move Perez to third. Jordan Henry lifted a sacrifice fly to bring in Perez to spoil the shutout bid. The next hitter, Juan Diaz, stroked a base hit to right to break up the no hitter. Nick Weglarz drove in Diaz with a double to right to make it 4-2, but that was as close as the Aeros would get.
The Phillies, who have won three of the four games in the series, got solid relief help from lefty Frank Gailey in the eighth, and righty Colby Shreve in the ninth. Shreve earned his first save.
Wright (5-4), pitching on three day's rest, deserved better, as he walked only one and struck out seven, matching his season-high. In six innings, he gave up only three hits and retired the final seven men he faced. His ERA now stands at 1,79.
Loek van Mil worked two scoreless innings for Akron, extending his scoreless innings streak to 9 1/3.
Chun Chen left the game with an apparent injury after drawing a walk in the sixth inning. He was lifted for a pinch-runner and retired to the clubhouse with Aeros trainer Chad Wolfe.
The Aeros and Phillies will conclude the five-game series Monday morning with a 9:35 AM game at First Energy Stadium. RHP Brett Brach (2-2, 3.90) will start for Akron, while RHP Jonathan Pettibone (6-5, 3.62) is scheduled to oppose for Reading. All Aeros games are broadcast on Fox Sports 1350 AM and online at www.akronaeros.com. For more information, please call the Aeros at 330-253-5151.
