Aeros Come from Four Behind to Beat Thunder, 8-5

(Akron, OH) - Akron overcame an early 4-0 deficit by scoring eight unanswered runs including four in the seventh inning as the Aeros defeated Trenton, 8-5, Saturday afternoon at Canal Park. Pinch-hitter Jared Goedert's three-run home run against Francisco Rondon put Akron ahead to stay and the Aeros beat the Thunder for the third straight day.

Trenton built a 4-0 lead after three innings, scoring all the runs against Akron starter Giovanni Soto. Luke Murton and Addison Maruszak had RBI hits in the second while Melky Mesa drove an RBI single to right in the third.

The Aeros then scored at least once in every inning they batted beginning in the fourth. Akron plated one run in the fourth, fifth and sixth frames against Trenton starter Josh Romanski and got to within 4-3 heading into the seventh.

Ryan Pope (0-2) allowed back-to-back hits to start the seventh and was relieved by Rondon, who was making his Eastern League debut. After a strikeout, Rondon threw a low pitch that eluded catcher Jeff Farnham and allowed Thomas Neal to score the tying run from third.

Rondon then walked Adam Abraham to put two runners on base for the pinch-hitter Goedert, who clubbed his first homer of the season well out to left field. Ryan Rohlinger added a solo shot for Akron off of Rondon in the eighth to make the score 8-4.

Mesa would homer for Trenton in the ninth to complete the scoring. He led the Thunder offense by going 3-for-4 with two RBI, two runs and two stolen bases. Kyle Landis (1-0) pitched three scoreless relief innings to earn the win, while Bryan Price worked the final two frames and earned his first save.

The series concludes Sunday afternoon as Akron goes for the sweep with first pitch scheduled for 1:05 pm at Canal Park. Thunder righty Craig Heyer (0-1) is expected to pitch against Akron lefty Eric Berger (0-1). Radio coverage on 91.3 FM (WTSR) and streaming online begins at 12:50 pm.
