B-Mets Drop Sloppy Matinee in Portland, 5-3

PORTLAND, ME - The Portland Sea Dogs pounded out nine hits and took advantage of seven walks issued by four Binghamton pitchers in a 5-3 win over the B-Mets today at Hadlock Field.

Three of Binghamton's seven walks were issued in the decisive sixth inning in which the Sea Dogs scored three runs and broke up a tie game.

Today's contest started calmly with B-Mets starter Darin Groski cruising through his first three innings. However, the lefty ran into trouble in the fourth. Following a leadoff walk to Juan Carlos Linares and a wild pitch, Bryce Brentz laced an RBI double to right centerfield. The Sea Dog was quickly brought home on Oscar Tejeda's double to left field, giving Portland a 2-0 lead.

Binghamton had a quick rebuttal against Portland starter Billy Buckner in the fifth. The right-hander walked Josh Rodriguez and Juan Centeno grounded a single through the hole to right to put two runners board. Sean Kazmar brought both home by lining a double off the left-centerfield wall.

The B-Mets nearly cracked in the fifth. After Heiker Meneses was hit by Gorski to start the inning, Derrik Gibson pushed a bunt up the third base line. The B-Mets pitcher fielded the roller cleanly, but his throw to first tailed towards the runner. Gibson ran into Allan Dykstra's left arm and the ball rolled down the first base line. When the dust settled, Portland had runners at second and third, Dykstra was pulled from the game and Gorski's day was done. The southpaw took a no-decision and struck out five while allowing two runs over four innings.

Kevin Mulvey entered in relief and escaped unscathed. After recording a strikeout, he walked Juan Carlos Linares intentionally to load the bases. The gamble paid off when Bryce Brentz flied out to center and Reynaldo Rodriguez grounded out to end the inning.

Binghamton threatened in the top of the sixth, but failed to come through against reliever Will Latimer. The lefty allowed the first two batters to reach and move to second and third, but battled back to strand both to post a scoreless frame.

Mulvey's good fortune did not carry over to the sixth. He walked the first three batters he faced on 14 pitches to load the bases. Edgar Ramirez entered in relief and allowed a two-run double to Derrik Gibson to break the tie game. Vitek supplied an RBI single one batter later to kick the Portland lead to three.

After Latimer posted a scoreless seventh, Josh Fields took over in the eighth. Juan Lagares greeted him with a double to right and scored on Oswaldo Navarro's single to cut Portland's lead to two.

That was as close as Binghamton could get as their rally fell short in the ninth. The B-Mets loaded the bases with two outs on a fielder's choice and two singles. With the tying run at second, Field caught Eric Campbell looking to end the ball game.

The win went to Latimer, while Mulvey suffered his first loss. Fields picked up his first save of the season.

The B-Mets (3-5) look for the series split tomorrow afternoon with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 PM. RHP Greg Peavey gets the nod for Binghamton against RHP Chris Balcom-Miller for Portland. The Horizons Federal Credit Union pre-game show begins at 12:45 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
