Norfolk Admirals News Release

NORFOLK, Va. - Brandon Bochenski had two goals and two assists to vault the Norfolk Admirals (8-7-0-0) past the Binghamton Senators (6-7-2-0) 5-3 on Wednesday night at Norfolk Scope Arena in the Admirals' last home action before a season-long eight-game road trip.

With a Nor'Easter brewing outside of Scope, the Admirals gave the home fans who braved the weather something to cheer about as they stormed out of the gates and took a 3-0 lead after one period of play. It took just 2:06 for Norfolk to take a 1-0 lead on Brandon Bochenski's team-leading ninth goal of the season. Bochenski took a Juraj Simek feed and roofed a backhand shot over the shoulder of former Admirals goaltender Mike Brodeur.

The lead doubled with a power play goal a little over one minute later. Bochenski sent a pass to Ty Wishart at the right point and Wishart sent a one-timer past Brodeur for his first goal of the season at 3:20.

The Admirals took a 3-0 lead with just 46 seconds remaining in the period on a play where all six Admirals on the ice touched the puck. Admirals goaltender Riku Helenius set it up by teeing up the puck on a wraparound behind the net. Vladimir Mihalik emerged from behind Helenius along the right wing and passed up to Matt Syroczynski through the neutral zone near the player benches. He dished it to Adam Hall crossing the Binghamton blue line, and Hall dropped the puck to Martins Karsums through the right circle. Karsums then sent a pass to the top of the left faceoff circle. Mike Lundin corralled the pass, skated into the high slot and sent a wrister past Brodeur for his second goal of the season.

Binghamton replaced Brodeur with Andy Chiodo in net to start the second period. However, the change made no difference as the home team claimed a 4-0 lead 5:26 into the stanza. Bochenski sent a shot from the left half wall that Blair Jones redirected past the left leg of Chiodo for his third goal of the season.

A wild third period saw the Admirals and Senators exchange three goals in a 1:09 span midway through the frame. Denis Hamel netted Binghamton's first goal of the game at 7:38 before Bochenski answered with his second of the contest 27 seconds later. Bochenski took a pass from Jones and fired a shot under the right arm of Chiodo for his 70th career goal as an Admiral.

The Senators closed out scoring with a pair of Kaspars Daugavins markers, the first at 8:47 and the second on the power play at 19:08.

Riku Helenius (32 shots, 29 saves) earned the win. Former Admiral Mike Brodeur (9 shots, 6 saves) started the game and did not receive a decision in 19:46. Andy Chiodo (26 shots, 24 saves) came on in relief and took the tough loss with 39:08 of play.

Norfolk was 1-6 on the power play. Binghamton was 1-4.

The Admirals now embark on a season-high eight-game road trip beginning on Friday night in Hershey and Saturday night in Albany. All Admirals games can be heard on STAR 1310-AM and star1310.com. They can also be seen on a pay-per-view basis on ahllive.com.
