Norfolk Admirals News Release
ADIRONDACK, N.Y. - The Norfolk Admirals lost their third consecutive road game Wednesday morning at the Glen Falls Civic Center in a 3-2 defeat to the Adirondack Thunder.
Adirondack started the scoring early when Mike Bergin fired a shot from the top of the right circle. Two bodies in front screened Norfolk goaltender Ty Rimmer, and the puck bounced off a player and around Rimmer for a 1-0 Thunder lead with only 3:36 gone in the first.
Norfolk fell into a two-goal hole minutes later on a Dana Fraser marker at 6:03. Ryan Culkin advanced a puck up the left flank for Fraser, who drove to the net through the left ring. With speed, Fraser sliced across the crease and tucked a backhander past Rimmer to double the advantage, 2-0.
However, the Admirals clawed back to within one a minute and a half later. Steven Whitney's shot from the right side on an odd-man rush ricocheted off Adirondack netminder Ken Appleby's pad to an oncoming Steven Mele. The Admirals' second chance from Mele's stick lit the lamp at 7:33 of the 1st to cut the lead in half going to the first intermission.
The count evened at 2-2 at 6:50 of the middle frame on Jonathan Lessard's second goal of the season. Alexandre Ranger's attempt was knocked down and Lessard stuffed the loose puck over the line to pot the equalizer.
Just 10 short seconds later, a turnover at the Admirals' blue line afforded Mitchell Heard a chance on Rimmer off a feed from Louick Marcotte. Heard lined a wrister for the top right corner to stave off an urgent Norfolk side once again. Adirondack's third goal of the game marked the end of Rimmer's day, and the Admirals debut for backup Tyler Beskorowany.
The hosts held on to a 3-2 lead the rest of the second and the following 20 minutes to hand Norfolk the team's third straight road setback. Rimmer got in front of 20 of 23 Thunder attempts on net in 27 minutes of play, as Beskorowany kept out all 15 shots he faced over the course of 33 minutes. Appelby posted another solid outing for his eighth win of the year, denying 23 of 25 shots. Neither team registered a power-play goal on two Norfolk opportunities and three Adirondack man advantages.
A look ahead for the Admirals includes three straight games at the Verizon Wireless Arena to oppose the Manchester Monarchs this Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
