Admirals Defeat Binghamton 6-5 in a Shootout

The Admirals won an exciting seesaw battle with Binghamton Friday night, defeating the Senators 6-5 in a shootout.

Binghamton and Norfolk exchanged goals twice in the opening frame, with the Senators getting on the board first on a power play goal. Steve Martins sent a pass to the top of the crease that Jeff Heerema one-timed past Admirals goalie Adam Munro at 12:49. The Admirals struck back less than two minutes later on a power play of their own. Mark Cullen, camped out in the corner to the left of Binghamton goaltender Billy Thompson, sent a pass to the high slot. Carl Corazzini sent a one-timer blast past Thompson glove side high at 14:33. The Senators resumed thei one-goal lead 26 seconds later, as Martins once again found Heerema for an even strength goal at 14:56. It appeared as if Binghamton would maintain their lead heading into the second period, as Admirals forward Eric Meloche took a tripping penalty late in the opening frame. However, Quintin Laing sent a wrister from the faceoff dot to the left of Thompson on a two-on-one break. The shot eluded the Senators backstop glove-side at 18:05. Binghamton out-shot Norfolk 10-6 in the first twenty minutes, and the score was tied 2-2 heading into the second period.

The Senators scored their second power play goal of the game at 4:52, as Denis Hamel put a rebound past Munro. The Admirals re-tied the game at three goals apiece five minutes later. While on the power play, James Wisniewski sent a slap shot from the blue line that Thompson stopped. Nathan Barrett picked up the rebound at the top of the crease and slid the puck under Thompson's stick at 9:37. The Senators continued the back-and-forth nature of the game with an even strength goal at 14:33. Denny Bois sent a wrister from the high slot that eluded the glove of Munro. A bad bounce put the Admirals behind by two goals late in the second period. With a Senator in the penalty box, center Gregg Johnson sent a faceoff win to defenseman Filip Novak in the neutral zone. Novak sent a bouncing dump-in on net that hopped over Munro's glove for a shorthanded tally at 15:48. Binghamton out-shot Norfolk 15-9 in the middle period and took a 5-3 lead into the third.

Corey Crawford began the third period in goal for the Admirals, and stopped nine shots to keep Norfolk in the game. The Admirals closed to within a goal of the Senators on a Matt Keith tally at 9:50. Milan Bartovic sent the puck toward the net that Keith deflected past Thompson. The Admirals tied the game with less than four minutes to go in the third. Thompson stopped a Quintin Laing deflection bid but couldn't control the rebound. As he fell to the ice, Laing slid the puck past Thompson to knot the game at 5-5. Eric Meloche nearly won the game for Norfolk with less than two minutes to go, but his shot hit the crossbar, and the game went into overtime.

Norfolk had two power play chances in the extra frame and sent ten shots on Thompson. The Admirals nearly won the game twice, as they hit the post and had a goal disallowed for goaltending interference as time expired. In the shootout, Martin St. Pierre converted on his two attempts - the second winning the shootout in the seventh round 2-1.

Corey Crawford got the shootout victory for the Admirals and stopped all nine shots he faced in the third period and overtime. Adam Munro played two periods for the Admirals and did not receive a decision after stopping 20 of 25 shots. Billy Thompson ended up with the shootout loss for the Senators allowing five goals on 38 Norfolk shots.

Norfolk was 2-8 on the power play while Binghamton was 2-7.
