Binghamton Senators News Release

BINGHAMTON, NY - The Binghamton Senators held a two-goal lead heading into the third period, but let the victory slip away and suffered a 6-5 shootout loss to the Norfolk Admirals on Friday night.

The Sens jumped out to a 1-0 lead thanks to Jeff Heerema's power-play tally at the 12:49 mark of the opening period.

Binghamton was not able to hold the lead long however, as less than two minutes later Norfolk netted a power-play goal of their own when Carl Corazzini picked up his seventh goal of the year to tie the score 1-1.

Binghamton struck quickly and took back the lead, 2-1, when Steve Martins was able to find a wide open Heerema in the slot. Heerema beat Admirals goaltender, Adam Munro, for his second goal of the evening and his fourth goal in three games.

As Norfolk forward Eric Meloche sat in the penalty box with a two-minute tripping minor, the Admirals found a way to even things up. Quinten Lang's short-handed tally at the 18:05 mark of the first period knotted the score 2-2 heading into the first intermission.

Denis Hamel gave Binghamton the lead back just five minutes into the middle frame. The power-play goal came when Neil Petruic's shot from the point slipped past Munro and Hamel slammed it home.

Norfolk tied the game again when Barrett recorded his tenth goal of the season. The power-play goal came 9:37 into the second period with the assists going James Wisniewski and Corazzini.

Binghamton then jumped out to 5-3 lead with less than five minutes to play in the middle stanza. Danny Bois netted his second goal of the year with a great effort to skate the puck into the slot from the boards. Bois fired a wrist shot as he was falling to the ice to give the Sens a one-goal advantage. Shortly after Bois' goal, defenseman Filip Novak gathered the puck off a faceoff at center ice and floated it into the offensive zone where it took an unusual bounce over Munro's shoulder, putting the Sens up 5-3.

In the third period Norfolk decided to shake up their goaltending and sent Corey Crawford into the game in relief of Munro. The move may have shifted momentum to the Admirals side as they were able to score two goals in the final ten minutes of the third period to send the game to overtime.

After a scoreless overtime period, the game would ultimately be decided by a shootout. Novak gave the Sens an early advantage by scoring on the team's first shot.

Martin St. Pierre knotted things up with a shootout tally of his and then secured the win for Norfolk with his seventh-round goal. Novak was the Sens last hope, but was denied by Crawford as Binghamton fell to Norfolk by a 6-5 score.

Billy Thompson, who stopped 33 of 38 shots he faced, was saddled with the loss while Corey Crawford picked up the win for Norfolk, turning away all nine shots he faced in 25 minutes of relief duty for Munro. Munro allowed five goals on 25 shots through the first two periods of play.

Binghamton was two for seven on the power play, while the Admirals capitalized on two of their eight power play opportunities.

The Senators are in action again on Saturday night when the Providence Bruins visit the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena for the only time this season. Call (607) 722-SENS for ticket information.
