Milwaukee Admirals News Release
Milwaukee, WI-The Milwaukee Admirals got two assists from Darren Haydar and Greg Classen and Brian Finley stopped 22 or 23 shots thrown his way as the Ads beat the Iowa Stars 3-1 in the first game of their best-of-seven Western Division Semi-Final match-up. Game two is set for Saturday night at 7:00 pm at the Bradley Center.
The Admirals struck first when Rich Peverley found the back of the net off an assist from newly acquired forward Alex Kim. After the puck was sent around the Iowa net, Peverley gathered the puck along the far boards and fired a wrist shot that beat Iowa goaltender Mike Smith.
The Stars appeared to have tied the score at one shortly after the Admirals scored, but referee Gord Dwyer blew the whistle before the puck got by Admirals netminder Brian Finley. The Ads would also have a goal called off when it was ruled that Cal O'Reilly deflected the puck into the net with a high stick during the third period.
Steve Lingren made it 2-0 Admirals with a power play goal at the 11:23 mark of the first when he fired a shot from the high slot that made its way through traffic and past Smith. Haydar and Classen assisted on the play.
Iowa's lone goal of the night came on a fluke play with just under six minutes to go in the first. Defenseman Niklas Grossman sent the puck from the neutral zone behind Finley and the puck took a funny bounce off the boards and went right to Grossman in front of the net. The Stars blueliner gathered the puck and beat Finley to pull the Stars within one.
Finley was solid in net the rest of the way for the Admirals, stopping numerous point blank chances that the Stars had and also foiling a 5-on-3 power play in the middle of the third period. Milwaukee stopped all seven of Iowa's power plays in the game.
Milwaukee got their final goal of the evening off a pretty play from Haydar and Simon Gamache at the 6:52 mark of the third period. Haydar stopped a clearing attempt by the Stars along the far boards, producing a two-on-one counter with Gamache. As Haydar approached the goal line Gamache slowed down just outside the Iowa crease and, after Smith committed to Haydar, the Milton, ONT native feathered a pass to Gamache who one-timed it into the Stars' net.
After the two teams play game two tomorrow they will head to Iowa for games three, four, and, if necessary, five at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. Games six and seven would then return to the Bradley Center.
