
Stars falter in Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE, WI - The Iowa Stars began their quest for the 2006 Calder Cup Friday night in Game One of the best-of-seven West Division Semi-Finals against the Milwaukee Admirals. The Milwaukee Admirals penalty-killing unit was the story of the game, denying Iowa on all seven of their man-advantages, and ultimately posting a 3-1 win. Milwaukee has a 1-0 lead in the seven game series.
The Admirals grabbed the early lead in Game One when Rich Peverley, on a ricochet of the end wall, found the back of Mike Smith's net at 5:43 of the first period. The Stars found themselves down 2-0 when Steve Lingren scored :10 seconds into a Milwaukee power-play. Darren Haydar and Greg Classen picked-up the assists at 11:23 of the opening period. Rookie B.J. Crombeen again will find his name beside an Iowa Star first. The first-year right-winger capitalized on an awkward bounce, registering Iowa's first-ever playoff goal at 14:09 of the opening frame. Defenseman Nicklas Grossman was credited with the assist.
At 6:52, Milwaukee's Simon Gamache gave the Admirals a 3-1 lead, scoring the lone goal of the second period. Haydar and Classen grabbed the assists. Goalie Mike Smith had eight saves in the period.
The physical play continued all throughout the third period. Despite receiving a 5-on-3 power-play for :27 seconds in the third period, the Iowa Stars were unable to climb back into this game, ultimately falling 3-1 in Game One of the best-of-seven series.

CALDER CUP PLAYOFFS: The best-of-seven series continues Saturday night Milwaukee at 7 PM, before returning to Wells Fargo Arena for games on Monday, April 24th, and Tuesday, April 25th. If necessary, Game Five will be held on Thursday, April 27th at Wells Fargo Arena. All of the home dates will have 7:05 PM face-offs. Games Six and Seven, also if necessary, will be on the road.
