Adam Oates Named Assistant Coach

Newark, NJ - The New Jersey Devils today completed their coaching staff by naming Adam Oates assistant coach. He joins a staff of Head Coach John MacLean, Assistant Coach Larry Robinson, and Goaltending Coach Chris Terreri. The announcement was made by Devils' President/CEO/General Manager Lou Lamoriello.
"Throughout his career, Adam was without question one of the top playmaking centers, particularly on the power play, and was considered one of the top face-off players in the game,"Â said Lamoriello. "These attributes bring a different dimension to our coaching staff and both John and I are delighted that Adam is joining our organization.-Â
Oates, 47, joins the Devils after serving Tampa Bay as an assistant coach during the 2009-10 season. He retired as an active player on April 3, 2004, compiling 341 goals and 1,079 assists for 1,420 points and 415 penalty minutes in 1,337 career games with Detroit, St. Louis, Boston, Washington, Philadelphia, Anaheim, and Edmonton. Oates played in five NHL All-Star Games during his 19-season career and was named to the league's Second All-Star Team in 1991. He reached the 100-point mark on four occasions including a career-high 142 in 1992-93. Oates ranks sixth all-time in assists, leading the NHL during the 1992-93 (97), 2000-01 (69, tie), and 2001-02 (64) seasons. He also saw action in 163 career playoff games, including two Stanley Cup Final appearances in 1998 and 2003, recording 42 goals and 114 assists for 156 points and 66 penalty minutes.
Oates signed with Detroit as a free agent on June 28, 1985 after three seasons at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (ECAC). He was a member of the Engineers' 1985 NCAA Championship team and was selected to the All-Tournament Team. Oates was also part of Rensselaer's 1984 and 1985 ECAC Championship teams. He was named to the league's First All-Star Team in 1985 and Second All-Star Team in 1984. Oates was also named to the NCAA East First All- American Teams in 1984 and 1985.
Born August 27, 1962 in Weston, Ont., Adam and his wife, Donna, reside in California during the off-season.
