Collins Joins Blue Jackets as Strength and Conditioning Coach

Columbus, Ohio - The Columbus Blue Jackets have named Kevin Collins as strength and conditioning coach, club General Manager Scott Howson announced today.

Collins, 28, joins the Blue Jackets after spending the previous five seasons with the Buffalo Sabres organization as strength and conditioning/video coach. He spent the past two seasons with the Portland Pirates (2008-10) and the previous three with the Rochester Americans (2005-08), the Sabres' American Hockey League affiliates. He started his career as an intern for Sabres Strength and Conditioning Coach Doug McKenney in 2004-05.

"Accepting the position as the Strength and Conditioning Coach with the Columbus Blue Jackets presents an excellent opportunity for Kevin to concentrate on his passion, which is to work with elite athletes at the highest level," said Pirates Head Coach Kevin Dineen. "Although difficult to see him move on, I am extremely excited for him and wish him the best of success."

The Detroit, Michigan native, Collins played four years of collegiate hockey at SUNY Brockport, where he graduated with degrees in Exercise Physiology and Business Management. He is certified through National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) as a certified strength and conditioning specialist.

The Portland Pirates are entering their 18th season as a member of the American Hockey League and their third season as the AHL affiliate of the Buffalo Sabres. Calder Cup Champions in 1994-95 and finalists in 1996-97, the Pirates have been home to a total of 230 players who have gone on to play in the National Hockey League.

In operation since 1936, the AHL continues to serve as the top development league for all 30 National Hockey League teams. More than 85 percent of today's NHL players are American Hockey League graduates, and for the ninth year in a row, more than 6 million fans attended AHL games across North America in 2009-10.
