Worcester Sharks News Release
WORCESTER - Worcester Sharks President Michael Mudd announced that the Sharks are making plans to commemorate their 5th anniversary as an AHL franchise throughout the upcoming 2010-11 season.
Granted an AHL franchise on January 9, 2006, the Sharks played their first game on October 6, 2006, winning in the shootout 4-3 at Portland. In 2010, Worcester will open their 5th year as an AHL franchise with the home opener at the DCU Center set for Saturday, October 23.
In conjunction with the milestone, the team has designed a special "V" logo and marketing campaign to be utilized throughout the 5th anniversary season. All season long, the team will wear a 5th anniversary patch on their sweater. Throughout the season, the team will introduce and wear a special 5th anniversary Worcester Sharks teal jersey with the "V" logo.
The team has planned several special 5th anniversary promotions throughout the season; including the raising of the Atlantic Division regular season championship banner on opening night, several bobblehead giveaways, a celebration of Worcester hockey history - Turn back the clock Ice Cats Night, sports celebrity signings, and much, much more.
In addition, the Sharks are hosting a Facebook membership drive from July 5 through October 5. If the Sharks Facebook page reaches 5,000 friends, every friend will receive one free ticket to a specified 2010-11 regular season game at the DCU Center.
Further plans to commemorate the team's 5th anniversary on- and off-the-ice will be announced throughout the summer.
Since entering the AHL in 2006-07, the Sharks have made the Calder Cup Playoffs three times and have reached the Atlantic Division Finals twice. Over the past four seasons, the Sharks have won 164 regular season games and have won two playoff series.
The Sharks have welcomed 660,794 hockey fans to the DCU Center over the last four regular seasons, including a franchise record 7,568 fans in a 2-1 win over the Providence Bruins on March 20, 2010. In addition, the Sharks and the City of Worcester hosted the 2009 AHL All Star Classic presented by Charter Communications in front of sellout crowds.
"Fans all over the Worcester area have embraced this franchise and its players from Day One," stated President Michael Mudd. "We are excited for the upcoming season and look forward to continuing to be a solid business and community partner within the central Massachusetts community for a long time to come."
The Sharks home opener at the DCU Center is Saturday, October 23!
