Aces sneak by Idaho in shootout
February 19, 2011 - ECHL (ECHL)
Idaho Steelheads News Release
(Boise, ID) - Evan Barlow and Marty Flichel each scored two goals for the Idaho Steelheads, but the Alaska Aces rallied late in the third period to force overtime and ultimately defeated Idaho, 6-5, in a shootout.
Barlow also added three assist for a five-point night, giving him a ten-game point streak. It's the longest active point streak in the ECHL.
Scott Howes and Mark Isherwood each tallied in the first for Alaska with Flichel netting a power-play tally as the Aces had a 2-1 lead after twenty minutes of play.
Early in the second, Dan Kissel's 14th goal of the season gave the Aces a two-goal cushion. The Steelheads didn't wait long to respond, though. Two minutes later, Junior Lessard tipped home a perfect Flichel pass to make it 3-2. A little over a minute later, Evan Barlow redirected Chris Hepp's shot from the blue line past Adam Courchaine and Idaho had evened up the game at three.
The Steelheads weren't done in the second stanza. At 12:09 of the second period, Tyler Ludwig lost his footing delivering a pass to Barlow. Barlow took the pass and one-timed it from the near circle past Courchaine to give Idaho a 4-3 lead going into the third period. Barlow now has 12 goals in 20 games since returning to the Steelheads from Europe in late December.
Idaho extended the lead to 5-3 when Flichel poked a rebound past a sprawling Courchaine, his 17th of the season was assisted by Lessard and Barlow. The two-goal lead held until less than nine minutes remained when Kory Falite spun a backhand shot past Jase Weslosky. Then, with just under five minutes to go, Isherwood's power-play tally tied the game at five. The Aces were able to kill off two minutes of a two-man advantage for Idaho late in regulation to force overtime.
In overtime, Alaska had a chance to end it but Weslosky made the save of the night, diving across the crease to keep the Aces from the OT winner to force a shootout.
Courchaine stopped all five Idaho shooters in the shootout. Weslosky stopped four of five, with the winner coming off the stick of former Steelhead Scott Burt.
Weslosky falls to 7-6-2 with the loss after making 35 saves on 40 shots. Courchaine also stopped 35 of 40 shots in the win. Idaho went 4 of 9 on the power play, while Alaska was 3 of 5 with the man advantage for the second straight night.
Idaho goes to Ontario for games Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday next week.
ROSTER NOTE: Prior to the game, goaltender Tyler Beskorowany was recalled to the American Hockey League by Idaho's AHL affiliate, the Texas Stars. The Steelheads added Jason Kuglin as an emergency backup for the game. The team also placed defenseman Cody Lampl on the 7-day Injured Reserve list.
Idaho returns to Qwest Arena on Wednesday, March 2, to face the Western Conference-leading Las Vegas Wranglers. It's part of a three-game homestand with games Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday against the Wranglers. Tickets are available at www.idahosteelheads.com or by calling 208.331.TIXS.
