Trenton Power Play Punishes Elmira, 3-2
February 19, 2011 - ECHL (ECHL)
Trenton Devils News Release
Trenton, NJ - Ryan Ginand scored two of Trenton's three power play goals, including the game-winning score early in the third period, as the Trenton Devils defeated the Elmira Jackals, 3-2, Saturday at Sun National Bank Center. Jeff Lerg stopped 36 shots in his first win since January 28 in Toledo, as the Devils won for the second time in three meetings with the Jackals this week.
Elmira's Michael Dubuc got the scoring started 7:40 into the first period by beating Lerg with a wrist shot into the top corner of the net. Dubuc also led the Jackals with seven shots on goal in the game but managed just the one goal and captured third star honors despite his team's loss.
Immediately following Elmira's goal, Harry Young, playing his first home game for Trenton, dropped the gloves with Josh Brittain, effectively canceling any momentum the Jackals might have gained by their opening score.
Ginand capitalized for Trenton on a power play five minutes later. The Milford, MA native got assists from his newest power play linemates, Dan Charleston and Matt Vokes, to tie the game 1-1. Brad Miller and Trevor Kell were the blueliners on the man-advantage, completing a newly assembled unit that has produced three power play goals this week.
The Devils took hold of Saturday's contest in the second period, peppering Marco Cousineau with 18 shots in the frame after putting only three shots on him in Friday's second period. Utilizing another power play, Jeremy Akeson gave the Devils a 2-1 lead at 13:26, beating Cousineau with a low wrist shot from a bad angle along the right goal line. It was the second goal in as many games for Akeson and his ninth score of the season. Tony Zancanaro and Dave Leaderer picked up the helpers on the second of three power play strikes by Trenton.
After killing off the remaining 1:45 of a Taylor Vickorek high-sticking double minor to start the third, Trenton got another power play chance thanks to an interference call against Matt Krug. Sustained pressure from the power play unit that produced the Devils' first score clicked again. Ginand picked up a rebound off a Vokes shot in the slot and deked Cousineau out of position before burying a backhand shot to extend the Devils lead to 3-1. Vokes and Charleston again earned assists on Ginand's team-leading 23rd goal of the season.
Down by two goals and pressing to get the game back within reach, Dale Mahovsky scored his first goal of the season by finishing off a crisp feed from Tristin Llewellyn at 7:38 of the third, but Elmira's league leading offense failed to complete the comeback. Elmira finished 0-for-5 on the power play, while the Devils were 3-for-6.
With the win, Trenton moves to 20-28-1-3 with 44 points, and are eight points back of the Toledo Walleye who took over the eighth and final playoff spot Saturday, thanks to a shootout win over Kalamazoo. Elmira remains tied with Gwinnett with 51 points, one point behind Toledo. The Devils return to the ice Sunday at 4 p.m. against the North Division-leading Wheeling Nailers.
