Kalamazoo Loses 2-1 to Toledo in a Shootout

February 19, 2011 - ECHL (ECHL)
Kalamazoo Wings News Release

Toledo, OH- Starting a stretch of seven games in nine nights, the Kalamazoo Wings entered the third period with the lead, but it was the Toledo Walleye that fought back to leave the Huntington Center with the 2-1 shootout victory.

A quick tempo in the opening period seemed to favor the K-Wings. Kalamazoo outshot Toledo 13-9 and earned the lone goal in the frame. Darryl Lloyd (9th) put the K-Wings ahead 1-0 7:29 into the period with a rebound marker. After Andrew Fournier's slap shot was stopped by Jimmy Spratt, Lloyd extended his point streak to five games by sending in wrister past the outstretch goaltender.

While Kalamazoo controlled the first period, Toledo countered in the second period, outshooting the K-Wings 21-5 in the period, earning a majority of those chances on three power-play opportunities.

Despite the lopsided shot totals, the K-Wings kept their lead in the period through dominate goaltending from Ryan Nie, who stopped 25 of his game-high 42 saves in the second period.

Toledo finally figured out a way to beat Nie in the third period, as Mike Hedden (18th) scored the equalizer on a backhander midway into the period.

Hedden's goal would be the last of regulation and with neither team scoring in overtime; the game would be decided in a shootout. The Walleye outscored the K-Wings 2-1 in the extra session to escape with the one goal victory.

Despite the shootout loss, Kalamazoo still leads the State Line Face-Off Series, Presented by AmeriGas, America's Propane Company with a record of 5-2-1-1.
