ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Ryan Gale had a hat trick and Mike Scott scored twice as Alaska built a 4-0 lead after the opening 20 minutes and never looking back in a 7-1 rout of Stockton before 4,055 Wednesday at Sullivan Arena.
The last-place Thunder took four early penalties and paid dearly for those transgressions, as Scott scored the first of his two power play goals on a one-timer from Peter Metcalf at 6:45 in a five-on-three situation. With just three seconds left on the fourth man advantage, Corbin Schmidt blasted a one-timer past beleaguered Stockton netminder Jeff Weber for a 2-0 edge at 10:26. Gale, a rookie out of Niagara University who had not scored in his first 25 games as a pro, collected his first on a tip-in of a Justin Maiser drive from the point at 13:43. Maiser also assisted on Gale's second goal three minutes later, which came off the rush and gave the Aces a 4-0 bulge at intermission.
Metcalf set Scott up for a virtual tap-in on another five-on-three to lead off the scoring in the second period at 9:57. Aaron Foster cut the gap to 5-1 with a power play goal for Stockton at 14:17, but with two minutes left in the frame, Joe Talbot quickly restored Alaska's lead to five goals with a backhander from between the circles, his 10th in 15 games since returning to the lineup. Gale capped the scoring, and completed his hat trick, with a wraparound at the 13:35 mark of the final period. Matt Underhill stopped 22 of 23 shots to collect his 16th win between the pipes. The game also marked the return of forward Mike Lee and defensemen Corbin Schmidt and Louis Mass to the lineup.
The victory brings the Aces (28-6-3 overall) to within two points of West Division leader Las Vegas, who will play at Phoenix tomorrow. Alaska, meanwhile, faces two more games against Stockton (6-20-5), Friday and Saturday night at 7:15 p.m. All Alaska Aces games, home and away, are broadcast live on KFQD AM 750 and at www.alaskaaces.com. In addition, all home games and selected road contests will be available on a pay-per-view basis on the internet, courtesy of B2 Networks.
