Aces Beef Up
November 27, 2002 - ECHL (ECHL)
Alaska Aces News Release
BOISE, Idaho â The Anchorage Aces have made wholesale changes to their roster in preparation for a crucial three-game series in Idaho against the first-place Steelheads.
6-4, 245-pound rookie forward Jason Boily joins the Aces after beginning the year playing junior hockey in Manitoba. Blessed with huge hands, the 20-year-old Boily also spent 10 games in the Western Hockey League last year in Medicine Hat. The other new additions each wear a championship ring from their previous pro experience. Jason Modopoulos, 25, racked up 304 minutes in penalties during the 1999-2000 campaign for the Colonial Cup (UHL) champion Flint Generals. Modopoulos, a Toronto native who checks in at 6-1, 215 pounds, had a brief junior career that included 21 games in the Ontario Hockey League with the Kitchener Rangers, where he scored two goals in 21 regular season games and had one assist in 12 postseason contests.
Finally, 6-6, 250 pound Rob Davidson will enter the mix after spending training camp with the Richmond Renegades in the ECHL. Davidson, who just turned 25 two weeks ago, has played all four of his previous pro seasons under the leadership of his coach and father, Rod. He won a championship in the CHL along with teammates Eric Landry and Yvan Corbin while playing for Indianapolis in 2000. In 18 career playoff games for the Ice, Davidson has one goal and 26 minutes in penalties.
Forwards Gregg Zaporzan (one goal, one assist, -6) and Chris Pont (one goal, -8), along with rookie defenseman Valdemar Pelikovsky (one assist, -4), were released to make room on the roster. Defenseman Don Martin will be in the lineup after missing two games with back spasms and fellow blueliner Dave Csumrik has been activated from the injured reserve list for tonight's match-up; however, forwards J.J. Wrobel and Kevin McNeill did not make the trip. Anchorage has lost all five previous meetings with the Steelheads this year this year and is only 5-29-4 overall against Idaho since October 2000. The series gets underway tonight at 5:00 p.m. AST, and continues with Friday and Saturday night games at 5:00 p.m. AST.
For ticket information, please call 258-ACES. All games are broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM and at www.anchorageaces.com or www.kfqd.com with Jack Michaels calling the play-by-play. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off, presented by GCI.
