BURLINGTON, VT --- Trevor Sprowl went 2-for-4 with RBI singles in the second and fourth innings to lead the Aberdeen Ironbirds to a 3-1 victory over the Vermont Lake Monsters on Wednesday night at historic Centennial Field.

The Ironbirds got on the board in the second as Randy Gassaway singled with one out, moved to second on a passed ball and scored on a Sprowl two-out RBI single to rightfield off Vermont starter Jordan Schwartz (0-2). Then in the fourth after a Steve Laurino leadoff single, Sprowl again got a two-out RBI single to right off Schwartz, who allowed the two runs on five hits over four innings.

After the fourth inning the game was delayed an hour and 23 minutes by rain, then stayed 2-0 Aberdeen until the Lake Monsters scored their run in the bottom of the seventh on a throwing error by third baseman Ronarsy Ledesma on a sacrifice bunt attempt. Vermont had runners on second and third with no outs, but Aberdeen reliever Kevin Grendell got out of the inning with a pair of shallow flyballs and a line drive out to center to keep the game 2-1 Ironbirds.

Aberdeen got an insurance run in the ninth when Laurino led off with a triple and scored one-out later on a Jerry McClanahan RBI groundball single to center. Grendell (1-1) allowed an unearned run on two hits with one walk and four strikeouts over three innings for the win, while Elias Pinales tossed two scoreless innings for his first save.

Vermont's Michael Fagan recorded four strikeouts, including the side in the sixth inning, in his three perfect innings of relief, while Jesus Lopez was 2-for-3 with a run scored and Shawn Duinkerk went 2-for-4. With the loss, the Lake Monsters finished 1-5 on the six-game homestand to begin the 2015 season.

Vermont head out on the road for a three-game series at Hudson Valley, beginning on Thursday night at 7:05 pm. The Lake Monsters will return home to Centennial Field to begin a three-game series with the Lowell Spinners on Sunday evening at 5:05 pm.
