Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release
NORWICH, CT-The Connecticut Tigers (1-4) have now lost three in a row after dropping their third straight to Staten Island (4-2) by a score of 7-4.
In game two of the doubleheader the Staten Island Yankees picked up right where they left off against Tigers starter Chase Edwards (0-1). After a scoreless first inning for both teams the Yankees exploded for three runs in the second. The first two reached in the inning when left fielder Griffin Gordon singled and right fielder Jhalan Jackson walked. Third basemen Drew Bridges broke the scoreless tie with an RBI double scoring Gordon. Following an RBI groundout, center fielder Jeff Hendrix drove in the third run of the inning with a single pushing the score to 3-0.
Staten Island continued to swing the bats one inning later. In the third the Yankees plated another four runs on five hits. The hit that broke the game open was a long three-run blast to deep left by Jhalan Jackson making the score 6-0. For Jackson it was his league lead tying third home run of the season. The Yankees added another run in the inning to extend there led to 7-0.
Connecticut struggled offensively through the first five innings thanks in large part to a strong start from the Yankees Derek Callahan (1-0). Callahan didn't allow a hit until first basemen Corey Baptist singled with two-outs in the fourth.
The Tigers where able to make it interesting however. With relief pitcher Kolten Mahoney on the mound in the bottom of the sixth the Yankees began to have trouble fielding the ball committing three errors in the inning. When the smoke cleared Connecticut had scored four runs and trailed just 7-4.
Connecticut got no closer as Mark Seyler (1) entered the game in the bottom of the sixth and picked up the save retiring all four batters he faced.
The Connecticut Tigers are the New York-Penn League affiliate of the Detroit Tigers and play a 76 game schedule that runs from mid June through early September. 2015 season tickets, group tickets, mini plans, individual game tickets, and team merchandise are now on sale! The front office and ticket office is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and can be accessed in person or by calling 860-887-7962.
