Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Tonight's Match-up
Tonight, the Aberdeen IronBirds look to win their second series in-a-row as they take on the Jamestown Jammers (Class-A Short-Season affiliate of the Florida Marlins) in the rubber match of a three-game series. After dropping the opener, the IronBirds beat the Jammers Thursday night, 5-1. Aberdeen starting pitcher Mike Wright tossed six shutout innings on the way to his second win of the season. Joe Velleggia cracked a three-run homer, his team-leading sixth of the season, to give the IronBirds a lead they would not relinquish. Tonight, the IronBirds will have right-hander Parker Bridwell on the mound. Bridwell currently ranks fourth in the New York-Penn League in strikeouts with 42 in 33.2 innings of work. He'll go up against right-hander Josh Hodges.
The Wright Stuff
Wright pitched six shutout innings in last night's win over the Jammers. He surrendered just three hits and two walks while striking out five. The six innings of work was a career-high for Wright. The win follows the worst start of his professional career.
Joe is Streaking
With a 3-for-4 effort last night, Velleggia has hit safely in 10 straight games. He is one game short of tying the IronBirds'' season-high for a hitting streak (Glynn Davis had an 11-game hitting streak). Velleggia currently leads the IronBirds in all three Triple Crown categories. He's tied for third in the New York-Penn League with six home runs.
Simon Says Ground Out
2011 Baltimore Orioles' fourth-round pick Kyle Simon pitched a perfect ninth inning in last night's win against Jamestown. Simon, who has yet to allow a hit in three innings of work, has gotten seven ground ball outs. Simon walked the first batter he faced as a professional. Nobody has reached against him since.
Davis' Doubles
With another double last night, Davis now leads the IronBirds with nine two-baggers. Davis has been able to use his speed to pick up an extra base on balls hit to the outfield. He also is tied for first in the league in steals with 16.
Coming Home
Following tonight's game, the IronBirds will head home to begin a three-game series with the Mahoning Valley Scrappers (Class-A Short-Season affiliate of the Cleveland Indians).
