BROOKLYN, NY - The Brooklyn Cyclones edged the Connecticut Tigers 2-0 in a pitcher's duel on Friday night at MCU Park to take the series two games to one.
Connecticut starter Brennan Smith tossed seven shutout frames, giving up just five hits and striking out six. Marcos Camarena threw six shutout innings for Brooklyn, surrendering only four hits, as he had a season-high seven strikeouts.
The teams remained scoreless into the eighth inning, when the Cyclones broke up the shutout. Melvin Mercedes came on in relief of Smith and retired the first two batters he faced, before walking Richard Lucas and allowing a Cole Frenzel base hit. Brian Harrison then came up with the biggest hit of the night, a two-run double to the left field gap to give the Cyclones a 2-0 lead.
Eric Beaulac retired all six batters he faced in the eighth and ninth inning to preserve the victory for Brooklyn and earn his first win of the season
Matt Perry was the lone bright spot on the Tigers offense, as he finished the night 2-for-2 and reached base all three times he came to the plate.
The Tigers will head home to begin a three-game series against the Batavia Muckdogs with game one tomorrow night. First pitch is set for 7:05 PM.
