Aberdeen IronBirds News Release

Tonight's Match-up

The Aberdeen IronBirds will try to snap an eight-game losing streak tonight against the Brooklyn Cyclones (Class-A Short-Season affiliate of the New York Mets). The IronBirds fell last night to the Staten Island Yankees 7-1. It was Aberdeen's worst loss of the season. The IronBirds will try to snap the skid with southpaw Aaron Wirsch on the mound. In his first start, Wirsch struck out nine batters in four scoreless innings against the Cyclones. He'll go up against right-hander Marco Camarena.

2011 Draft Picks

The IronBirds now have two 2011 draft picks on the roster. Catcher Adam Davis was added to the IronBirds roster Friday afternoon. An 11th round pick out of the University of Illinois, Davis batted .295 with five homers and 33 RBI. He also stole 15 bases and was caught just four times. The O's also added seventh round pick Trent Howard, a left-handed pitcher out of Central Michigan University, to Aberdeen's roster yesterday.

Promotions

To make room on the roster for Davis and Howard, outfielders Jeremy Nowak and Chris Clinton were promoted to the Class-A Delmarva Shorebirds. Nowak was batting .286 with two homers and a team-leading six RBI. Clinton had played in four games, collecting four hits in 15 at bats.

Givens Heating Up

After struggling for most of the season in Delmarva, Mychal Givens was sent to Aberdeen to play shortstop every day. His bat has come alive since returning to Ripken Stadium for the current home stand. The former second-round pick has multiple hits in his last three games. He hit his first homer of the season in last night's loss against Staten Island.

The Losing Streak

After winning on opening night, the IronBirds have lost eight straight games. All of the losses have come against teams in the division, causing Aberdeen to falling 5.5 games out of first place. The IronBirds franchise record for most losses in a row came over the 2004-2005 seasons. Aberdeen lost the final four games of the 2004 season, and then the first six of the 2005 season totaling a 10-game losing streak.
