TROY, NY - After a pitcher's duel threw the first eight innings, the Connecticut Tigers bats broke open in the ninth with two home runs to fuel them to a 3-1 victory over the Tri-City ValleyCats on Sunday evening from Joseph L. Bruno Stadium.

The game remained scoreless into the ninth inning, when Jason King started it off with a bang knocking his first professional homer over the right field fence to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. In his previous at-bat King was robbed of a home run by right fielder Drew Muren, who jumped at the wall and kept the ball in the park.

With two outs in the ninth, Zach Maggard connected for his second homer of the year, a two-run shot, to give the Tigers the insurance they would need for the victory.

The ValleyCats would score a run in the bottom of the ninth on a Zach Johnson RBI double, but Daniel Bennett shut the door and picked up his first save of the year.

Tigers' starter Matt Crouse tossed six shutout frames followed by two scoreless innings from Kevan Hess, while Tri-City starter Kyle Hallock threw six shutout innings for the ValleyCats.

Hess picked up his first win on the season, while Mitchell Lambson, who surrendered the King homer suffered the loss.

The Tigers will play game two of the three-game series against the Tri-City ValleyCats in Troy tomorrow night. First pitch is set for 7:00 PM.
