Lancaster Stormers News Release

Lancaster captured a tense, nearly four-hour battle on Saturday afternoon to advance to its first playoff berth in five years.

Adam Calderone drove in Tommy Everidge with the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh, and the Barnstormers held on for a thrilling, 4-3, win, clinching the first half title in the Freedom Division.

York rebounded to win the second half of the day-night doubleheader played in front of 8,047 at Clipper Magazine Stadium, 7-2, but for the Barnstormers and their fans, the nightcap was a mere formality.

In the opener, Lancaster jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the fourth. After Aaron Herr was thrown out at second trying to stretch a hit into a double, Calderone drilled a double off the huge wall in left and scored on a single to center by Angel Flores. Flores was able to move to second as center fielder Scott Grimes kicked the ball deeper into the alley and race to third on a grounder to short by Gilberto Mejia. J.C. Holt picked up the second run of the inning on a single into right. He would steal second and score when Tommy Everidge lined a single into left center.

Yunior Novoa pitched five strong innings for the Barnstormers, allowing three hits and a walk to preserve the 3-0 edge.

However, York got its break in the sixth when reliever Tim McNab hit Scott Grimes with an 0-1 pitch. Val Majewski snuck a single under Mejia's glove in the hole, and Ramon Castro singled in one with a soft liner to right center. McNab sent the runners to second and third with a wild pitch. Both scored when Jose Herrera bounded a single into center.

After Justin Segal (4-1) entered the game, Herrera moved up on a sacrifice bunt by James Shanks. Vince Harrison struck out for the second out. Chris Nowak followed with a towering fly ball toward the wall in left. Calderone got back and made a leaping catch against the boards for the final out, keeping the tie intact.

Everidge led off the seventh with a double, and the Barnstormers would eventually load the bases against Geoff Geary (0-1) on a hit batter and a walk. Calderone's fly to center was good enough for the 4-3 lead.

Butch Hobson used four more relievers to get the final nine outs. Jon Huber worked a perfect seventh, and Kris Regas retired Majewski on a deep fly to right center which was tracked down on a running catch by Holt. T.J. Beam survived a scare when Shanks' two-out drive to left center barely stayed in Sovereign Bank Stadium and kicked right to Holt to keep Castro from scoring all the way from first. Jonah Bayliss retired the side in order in the ninth to record his fifth straight save.

In the nightcap, Matt DeSalvo went the distance on a seven-hitter, striking out 12 to improve his record to 6-3. The Revolution right-hander had a shutout into the ninth when Calderone singled to center, and Aaron Herr clubbed a homer far onto the hill in left.

Scott Grimes paced the York offense with three hits, including a homer, and three RBI. Majewski also homered as part of a 15-hit York attack.

Ross Peeples (6-4) allowed 10 hits and five runs over 6 2/3 innings in the loss.

The Barnstormers and Revolution wrap up the first half with a 6:00 start on Sunday. Cesar Carrillo (2-5) will get the nod for Lancaster against lefty Chris Cody (6-4). The game will be aired on Fox Sports Radio, 1490, WLPA and streamed on sportsjuice.com and ibnsports.com.
