Crabs End First Half with Win

Camden, NJ - The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs wrapped up their first half of the season with a 5-1 win over the Camden Riversharks on Sunday evening at Campbell's Field in Camden, NJ.

The Blue Crabs put the game away with a three-run first inning. After two were out three straight singles by third baseman Kody Kirkland, centerfielder Brian Barton, and right fielder Ben Harrison gave Southern Maryland a 1-0 lead with Harrison's single driving in a run. Shortstop Tanner Townsend followed that with a two-run double down the leftfield line to increase the lead to 3-0.

Camden's lone run came in the third as an RBI single by second baseman Lloyd Turner cut the Blue Crabs' lead to two. However, Southern Maryland put single runs on the board in the fourth on an RBI double by first baseman J.R. Hopf, his first of the season, and another run in the seventh on another RBI single by Harrison.

Harrison was the big offensive producer for Southern Maryland as he went 2-5 with two RBI. The Blue Crabs pounded out 13 hits with Barton and second baseman Brandon Pinckney picking up three hits each. Each man also scored a run with Pinckney registering a double.

Camden only had five hits for the ballgame. Right fielder Drew Macias had two of them while going 2-3 with a double.

The win went to Blue Crabs starter Michael Schlact (4-0) who only went five innings and allowed one run on three hits. He also walked one and struck out none.

Camden starter Eddy Camacho (3-1) suffered the loss has he allowed 10 hits and four runs over six innings of work.

As they have done all season, the Southern Maryland bullpen was solid as relievers Jason Waddell, Charlie Manning, and Jim Ed Warden combined to go four scoreless innings while allowing two hits and striking out three.

Southern Maryland will now take the next four days off for the Atlantic League All-Star Break. The team returns to action on Friday, July 15 as they open a three-game series against the York Revolution at Regency Furniture Stadium. The starters for both teams have not been determined for the 7:05 start. The game can be heard on www.somdbluecrabs.com.
