Bridgeport splits doubleheader

Bridgeport, Conn. - The Bridgeport Bluefish (30-31) split the doubleheader against the Road Warriors (22-39) as the ‘Fish came back in the first contest and gave up the lead in the second game. The final score in the first contest was 6-5. Bridgeport lost 4-3 in the finale at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard.

In Game One, the Road Warriors had a 5-1 lead before the Bluefish stormed back and took the lead in the fifth. Angel Berroa doubled to left and advanced to third on a bunt single by Adam Greenberg. A wild pitch allowed Berroa to score and moved Greenberg to second. The leadoff hitter stole third and was driven in with a single to right from Angel Chavez. Luis Lopez singled to leftcenter and Wes Bankston gave his team the lead with a three-run shot to left. The first baseman drove in four runners in the opener.

Matt Smith struggled as the southpaw served three innings and allowed three earned runs; the Bluefish starter, though, did not factor in the decision. Will Cunnane (4-1) recorded the final out of the fifth to pick up the victory. Antonio Alfonseca and Juan Rincon did not allow a run in the final two innings. Rincon notched his ninth save of the year

Jusef Frias surrendered five runs in four innings but did not factor in the decision. Saul Rivera (1-1) suffered the loss as the reliever gave up the final Bluefish run in two innings of work.

The Bluefish had a 3-2 lead after Danny Putnam sent a two-run triple to the right of center; but the Road Warriors were able to tie the game in the fifth and take the lead for good in the sixth.

Brian McCullough (2-2) earned the victory as the righthander tossed two shutout innings in relief of Kelvin Villa. The lefthanded starter served three-and-two-thirds innings and allowed three runs on then night. Julio Manon (0-2) took the loss. The relief pitcher gave up the fourth run of the night in relief of Matt Pike. The Bluefish starter worked five frames and surrendered three runs.

Amadeo Zazueta had five hits in the doubleheader including a homer in Game Two. The infielder hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Alberto Cruz from third. That run turned out to be the game-winner.

The Bluefish continue a three-game series against the Road Warriors on Sunday Afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05. The gates open one hour before first pitch. Family Fun Sundays are presented by Chet. There is also a Sock Drive brought to you by Soldier Socks.
