August 15, 2007 - Eastern League (EL1)
New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Manchester, NH- New Hampshire Fisher Cats' fans attending the team's 7:05pm home game on Monday, August 20 are invited to "step up to the plate" to promote literacy by donating their gently used children's and youth books to benefit the Nashua Police Athletic League (PAL) Youth Library. Fidelity Investments employee volunteers from the firm's Merrimack, NH Regional Center will be on hand to collect the books as well as distribute the game night giveaway, Fidelity-sponsored backpacks, to the first 2,000 children.
The game's opening ceremonies will include the recognition of nearly 250 New Hampshire youth who participated in Fidelity's "Hit the Books" Summer Reading Challenge. The program encourages young fans to read five books this summer through special baseball player appearances and readings at community libraries throughout Southern New Hampshire. Participating readers are rewarded with two complimentary tickets to the Fidelity Night game.
In addition to the Summer Reading Challenge, Fidelity also sponsors the Fisher Cats "Base Hits for Books" Program, where based on the total number of Fisher Cats base hits at the end of the season, the firm will donate a designated number of books to a local charitable organization that is also a member of the Reading is Fundamental (RIF) program.
Funding for these literacy-based programs is provided by the Fidelity Literacy Initiative, which is designed to provide funding for programs that support community-based or regional literacy projects and programs for different age groups and populations. According to Alison Stebbins, Regional General Manger for the firm's Merrimack campus, Fidelity has a long history of supporting children's literacy programs. "We're pleased to partner with the Fisher Cats, and commend the league for sharing Fidelity's commitment to advancing the cause of literacy in New Hampshire," said Stebbins.
The Fisher Cats take on the New Britain Rock Cats, Double-A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins, at 7:05pm Monday night. Tickets are still available by calling (603) 641-2005 or visiting www.nhfishercats.com.
