Ottawa 67's News Release

(Ottawa ON.): The Ottawa 67's today announced two trades. Defenceman Brian Birkhoff was dealt to the Peterborough Petes in exchange for a 5th round draft pick, and overage forward Peter Stevens went to the Sarnia Sting for a 14th round pick. For 18 year-old Birkhoff, a native of Richmond Hill, the trade represents an opportunity to gain more ice time, and, for Stevens, the trade provides Ottawa with a possible future asset for a player they had to move or release to get back to the League maximum over 3 over-age players.

"With eight healthy defencemen on the roster, it wasn't possible to provide everyone with the ice time they needed to continue their development," said 67's General Manager Brian Kilrea. "Sending Brian to Peterborough gives him a better opportunity for a regular shift and it also moves him closer to home, which is always a good thing. Moving Peter Stevens to Sarnia gives him an opportunity to keep playing in the League and clears the over-age spot on the roster that we needed for Corey Cowick." Cowick returned to the 67's active roster last Friday after missing 41 games with a shoulder injury and scored 4 goals in three games over the weekend.

Birkhoff dressed for 33 games in Ottawa this season, recording 1 goal and 6 assists. Stevens recorded 1 goal, 1 assist and 60 penalty minutes in 35 games.
