SALISBURY (Md.) - Joseph Mahoney drove in Tyler Henson in the bottom of the ninth to give the Delmarva Shorebirds a walk-off win against the Lexington Legends, 2-1. The Legends wasted a strong start from Anthony Bello who pitched seven innings, allowing one run.
Delmarva scored first in the third inning when Kieron Pope led off the inning with a home run to left field. Pope's home run was one of only four hits the Shorebirds recorded against Bello in the game and was the only run they scored against the starter.
The Shorebirds boasted a strong starting performance of their own from Tony Butler. Butler pitched six scoreless innings, struck out nine Legends and walked two. Lexington scored its only run in the eighth inning against Delmarva reliever Aaron Odom. Odom pitched three innings for the win, allowing two hits, one run, striking out six and not walking a batter.
Lexington's run came on first baseman Eric Taylor's solo shot to left. The Legends scattered seven hits in the game.
Bello pitched seven innings. He allowed one run in the third inning, struck out eight Shorebirds and didn't walk any. He was relieved in the eighth by Fernando Abad.
Abad pitched a scoreless eighth inning before allowing a lead-off double to Henson in the ninth. Abad then intentionally walked Anthony Martinez. Mahoney followed that walk with a single to left which scored the winning run.
Lexington fell to 3-6 in one run games on the season and lost its third consecutive road game. The Legends finished the month of April with an 8-18 record. The two teams meet Thursday at 7:05 p.m. in the third game of the season.
