Columbus Catfish News Release
Columbus, Georgia- Jhoulys Chacin (4-1) pitched 7 outstanding innings for the visiting Asheville Tourists as they defeated the Columbus Catfish at Golden Park for the second time in as many days. Columbus' bats were unable to get it going again, only managing 6 hits and 2 runs in their fifteenth loss of the season.
Ashevilles right-handed starter Chacin struck out 8 Catfish batters in 7 innings of work, walking 1 and only allowing 6 hits. Their bullpen did an equally outstanding job in 2 innings of work, as Craig Baker and Randall Taylor combined for 6 straight outs, including 4 strikeouts.
The Tourists bats on the other hand continued to pound the baseball early in the game. First baseman Jeff Cunningham hit a long homerun in the second inning to give Asheville the early lead 2-0; and centerfielder Mike Mitchell plated another run in the third with an RBI ground out. The visiting team would tack on a fourth and final run in the fifth inning on a single and a triple from David Christensen and Everth Cabrera; and it would prove to be too much for the Catfish offense to overcome.
Columbus put their only 2 runs of the ballgame on the board in the latter half of the sixth inning; as Maiko Loyola singled with 2 outs, followed by an RBI double off the bat of Greg Sexton. Leftfielder Reid Fronk followed Sextons knock with a 2-bagger of his own to drive in Columbus' second run. However, Asheville's pitching was dominant and the 'Fish were unable to scratch out anymore runs on Baseball in Education Day at Golden Park.
The Asheville Tourists now boast a record of 20-7 and it puts them a half game closer to the league leading Charleston RiverDogs. Columbus fell to 11-15, but they will get a chance to better that record as they take on the Tourists again Thursday night at 7 P.M..
Tickets may be purchased by calling (706) 571-8866 or by ordering online at www.columbuscatfish.com. The Golden Park ticket office is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
The Catfish are the Class-A affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays.
