Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, SC â The New York Yankees announced Thursday that RiverDogs 2B Justin Christian has been promoted to high A Tampa and that INF Mario Holmann was added to the roster to take Christian's place.
Christian was solid for the RiverDogs, hitting .290 with three home runs and 10 RBI. The second-spot hitter provided speed at the top of the order, as he stole 17 bases in 19 attempts and scored 31 runs, which was tied for second in the South Atlantic League.
Holmann was signed by the Yankees as a non-drafted free agent in 2002. The native of Nicaragua spent most of 2004 with the Gulf Coast League Yankees, hitting .258 in 20 games. He was rated as the best defensive infielder in the entire Yankees organization by Baseball America.
The Yankees also announced Thursday that RHP Brad Blackwell has been released. The 12th-round pick in 2003 went 3-0 with a 4.71 ERA in 12 games for Charleston. He allowed 44 base runners in 21 innings of work this season.
Taking Blackwell's place on the roster is RHP Saydel Beltran. The native of Cuba comes to the RiverDogs from extended spring training, and went 5-0 with a 1.06 ERA in eight games, four of them starts, in the Dominican League last summer.
The RiverDogs have two games left in their eight-game homestand as they take on the Columbus Catfish Thursday night. It's Thirsty Thursday at "The Joe," presented by Wild Wing Café and 95 SX. Thursday is also the only appearance in Charleston by Myron Noodleman, the "Clown Prince of Baseball," presented by Yuengling. The first pitch between the RiverDogs and the Catfish is at 8:05 pm, as the game will be proceeded by a contest between The Citadel and Georgia Southern, which begins at 5 pm. Tickets are still available and can be purchased for tonight's game and the rest of the series by visiting the RiverDogs website at www.riverdogs.com or by calling the box office at (843) 577-DOGS (3647).
