Columbus Catfish News Release

CHARLESTON, SC— With the tying run on at second in the eighth and at third base in the ninth, the Catfish had an opportunity tonight to break a three-game losing streak, but failed to rally, dropping another one run game 5-4 to Charleston. The Catfish scored three runs in the eighth inning but left runners at first and second, and stranded the bases loaded in the ninth inning. The Catfish have lost four straight overall and three straight one-run games to the RiverDogs in this series. CF Jamie Hoffmann had three hits and reached base four times in the Catfish loss.

Columbus struck first tonight when 2B Travis Denker drove home Hoffmann in the first inning with an RBI double to left. Charleston tied the game in the second off Catfish starter RHP Blake Johnson when 1B Ben Jones homered to center field, the first HR given up by Johnson this season. The game remained tied at one going into the sixth inning, but Charleston took the lead on an RBI single by Jones that knocked Johnson from the game. Charleston scored another run in the sixth and two more in the seventh to lead 5-1.

Trailing by four in the eighth inning, the Catfish loaded the bases on two walks and an error. An error by Charleston SS Marcos Vechionacci allowed the Catfish to pull within two runs, and 3B David Nicholson's clutch two-out single drove home a run and put the tying run at third. The Catfish failed to score again in the inning against LHP Saydel Beltran but loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth. Beltran got a popout to finish the game, handing the Fish their sixth straight loss at Riley Park in Charleston this season.

Tomrrow the Catfish wrap up their eight-game roadtrip with the finale of the series against the RiverDogs, sending RHP Chris Malone (3-1, 3.30 ERA) to the hill with first pitch scheduled for 8:05 PM. The game can be heard on WDAK 540 AM in Columbus or on the internet at www.columbuscatfish.com.
