Madison Capitols News Release
GREEN BAY, WI - The Madison Capitols were narrowly edged by the Green Bay Gamblers, 3-2, at Resch Center on Saturday night. The Capitols and Gamblers are tied 1-1 in the race for the Wisconsin Cheese Cup, presented by Odyssey Greek Klondike Cheese.
Madison (7-13-0-1) is ranked ninth in the Eastern Conference with 15 points. Green Bay (11-9-2-0) is ranked third in the Western Conference with 24 points.
Skating on the power play, center Josh Dunne scored his sixth goal of the season at 14:53 of the final period for the 3-2 Gamblers victory. Center Nolan Moyle held the puck in the left corner of the Capitols zone before finding Dunne on the doorstep for a quick tip in for the go ahead goal.
Center Michael Mancinelli put the Capitols on the board with a shorthanded breakaway goal at 10:27 of the second period. Mancinelli stole the puck away from the Gamblers and skated through his opponent's zone and toward goaltender Maksim Zhukov. As he skated into the slot, Mancinelli backhanded the puck into the top left corner of the net for his second goal of the season and a 1-0 lead.
At 1:18 of the third period, Mancinelli netted his second goal of the night and third tally of the season to give Madison a 2-0 advantage. Center Cade Borchardt battled with a Gamblers player along the right wing boards when the puck popped free to the right face-off circle. Mancinelli grabbed the puck and wristed it past Zhukov to double the Capitols lead.
Left wing McKade Webster cut the Capitols lead in half, 2-1, with his third goal of the season at 8:24 of the final frame. Webster passed the puck defenseman Carver Watson who was skating down the left wing. Watson returned the puck to Webster in the slot for the tip in past netminder Dryden McKay.
Center Matt Jennings evened the game at 2-2 with his sixth goal of the season at 11:07 of the third stanza. Right wing Lean Bergmann slipped the puck passed a Capitols defender and to Jennings in the right face-off circle of Madison's zone. Jennings carried the puck to the net and stepped around McKay for the tying goal.
McKay (6-9-0) took his ninth loss of the season, stopping 42-of-45 shots. Zhukov (11-6-1) earned his 11th win of the season with 17 saves on 19 shots.
Madison was 0-for-3 on the power play. Green Bay went 1-for-3 with the man advantage.
Notables: Center Michael Mancinelli recorded his first two-goal game of this USHL career...Left wing Alec Broetzman ended his three-game scoring streak.
Madison will return home on Saturday, December 16 for a rematch the Gamblers at 6:05 p.m. It is the annual Teddy Bear Toss game.
