
10 Hits Not Enough in 9-3 Loss to South Bend

Peoria, IL- The Chiefs were unable to hold the Cubs in check in a 9-3 loss Wednesday at Dozer Park.
South Bend scored four runs against Peoria starter Trent Baker in the second inning. Moises Ballesteros doubled and Felix Stevens singled to open the frame. Luis Verdugo reached on an error by Baker which produced the game's first run. Christian Franklin followed with a double to make it 2-0. Ethan Hearn capped the rally with a bloop single to left which plated two more Cubs and made it 4-0.
Baker took the loss, allowing five runs over five innings of work, allowing nine hits and striking out two.
The Cubs made it 5-0 in the fifth on a Stevens single. Stevens went 3-for-5 to extend his hitting streak to six games.
The Chiefs struggled against South Bend starter Brody McCullough, who faced the minimum through his first four innings of work. Peoria added a tally on his line in the fifth on a Jeremy Rivas RBI single to make it a 5-1 contest.
McCullough completed 4 1/3 innings allowing one run on three hits, walking two and fanning two.
The Cubs responded with two runs in the sixth against Chiefs reliever Nathanael Heredia. Two walks and a hit batter loaded the bases. A walk to Kevin Made followed, making it 6-1. James Triantos grounded into a double play which added a run and made it 7-1.
Peoria got a run back in its half of the sixth on a Francisco Hernandez solo home run off Cubs reliever Stephen Gonzalves. Gonzalves was credited with the win, working 1 2/3 innings with two strikeouts.
South Bend added two more runs off Heredia in the eighth on a Triantos two-run home run to make it 9-2.
Peoria capped the scoring in the contest in its half of the eighth against Adam Laskey. Thomas Francisco and Alex Iadisernia reached on singles. Nathan Church rolled a grounder to the right side and an errant throw from the second baseman allowed Franicsco to score and make it a 9-3 contest.
The Cubs out-hit the Chiefs 13-10. Ballesteros joined Stevens with a 3-for-5 performance. Iadisernia had the lone multi-hit game for Peoria going 2-for-4.
Peoria has dropped seven in a row, tied for its longest losing streak of the year. The Chiefs fall to 46-46 and 13-13 in the second half. South Bend improves to 41-50 and 11-15 in the latter half. The Cubs now lead the season series eight to six.
Game Three of the series is scheduled for tomorrow at 6:35 p.m.
